Painful Changes, Uncertainty, Challenges

Pros

- Generous PTO and benefits package - Office space is comfortable and well stocked with new technology and snacks. - Demeanor is generally amicable and positive, and the majority of employees across all teams are friendly and relatively young, which is a perk for any prospective hires looking for relate-able and smart coworkers. - Paperless has collected some extremely talented people over the years and it can be very motivating to join and learn from them and see their talents in action. - Fun events, hosted speaking engagements and talks keep people engaged, and may provide opportunities for someone to make a few connections in their respective field outside of the company.

Cons

- Morale has been very low as a result of large and sudden layoffs. Having to say goodbye to talented friends was very hard. People continue to leave either from continued layoffs or voluntarily as a result of the lost sense of security or potential. Some felt betrayed by the effects of a... - Confusing strategic shift. Paperless is helmed by a tiny, isolated management group. They are all either friends from school or family. They are unaccountable, unrelatable to those other than themselves, and resort to using middle-tier roles as a buffer to communicate what are perceived as capricious project decisions. Changes to the company direction are sweeping and announced after the fact. - "Startup" vibe is gone, and the sense of explosive growth and challenging 'we can do it' attitude once shared by all has waned, replaced with fatigue from fear-of-being-downsized. Fewer people sense rewards in 'digging deep' or putting in the extra time as before. Fewer hope for raises or advancement. - Career advancement seems to have been a perennial challenge for the company. Systems are in place to 'look for' and discuss opportunities for advancement, but even team managers do not seem to know when opportunities for advancement will emerge, are unwilling or unable to plan out future roles. Too often, hopeful and competent employees are beat out by a shiny new hire filling the role above them. Maybe that will be you. Maybe that will happen to you. See what I mean?

Pros

Honestly, I've been around the block and this is one of my favorite places I have worked. I'm paid fairly for my work, and I am not overworked. I have good benefits. I like my boss and my team. I get to work on things that interest me, and expand my role to gain experience in areas that were siloed at my last company. There isn't a single person I've worked with here that I dislike. There's always snacks and fruit in the kitchen and the office has a number of working/lounge spaces if you want a change of scenery, and lots of windows. Periodically, trainers come in that give professional development workshops so I get to take a few hours now and then to learn how to give better presentations, think about my career path, etc. We just had company-wide project days and it was fun to see people from totally different parts of the company work on things together like new features, automation/efficiency, and other cool works. We have regular company meetings, emails, and bi-weekly demo sessions, so I know what other teams are working on and how my work fits in with theirs.

Cons

There was a little rain cloud in the office following a bunch of changes in May, including layoffs and new reporting structures. While that is rough, I've seen reorgs many times... but this is the first time I've seen a CEO call everyone into a meeting, and emotionally & transparently give an explanation of why decisions were made, and then present an optimistic plan going forward with the financial info to back it up. They should have had a firmer re-org plan, particularly for the tech re-org. I know some people took the layoffs hard, which is what happens when you really like your coworkers. I see some backlash here on Glassdoor, which reads like vendettas of people who were let go as part of the layoffs (again, something I've seen many times). It's totally understandable to feel resentment towards the C-team especially when you've lost your job, or lost friends at your job. I have respect for the members of the team I've worked with, though certainly no C-team is perfect and this is a natural time to see their flaws (and hopefully they will take this opportunity for growth as good managers and strategy leaders). There has been a bit of learning and reflection here since May and company strategy is becoming more focused. Overall, things are moving forward again and many of us are looking forward to the future.

Big opportunities, with big challenges ahead

Pros

Most of the people that work here are talented, hardworking, and committed. It's a good place to learn and right now there's a lot of opportunity to contribute. The recent strategic shift to focus soley on the digital business has resulted in a lot more focus around the company and it's become much easier to collaborate with other teams to produce impactful work.

Cons

The recent shift away from paper really wasn't expected and while it makes a lot of sense, the abruptness of the changes has caused some general anxiety around the company. Leadership is still working to find their footing and the culture has changed to be a lot more like a start-up where the work and the processes are being built from the ground up and that definitely isn't for everyone.
