Pros

I've been working with Paragon for 5 months, and haven't had a single day off (that's fine by me). The law firm is well connected with top-notch Bay Area tech clients. Management/support staff are excellent, personable, and responsive. This is an on-client-site project-based law firm, where life-style choice takes precedence over climbing the law firm ladder. There is essentially a flat rate of compensation among all employees that is very competitive for this type of firm. 401k opportunity and healthcare. Annual company event was very well done, and allowed me to meet my talented colleagues for the first time. I'm very pleased I joined. BTW, I think the very negative review posted above is fake.

Cons

As an on-site project-based law firm, you won't find any legal mentors within the firm. Given the project-based nature of the business, benefits get interrupted in down times (although I haven't as yet faced that problem myself -- knock on wood).

Thanks for the feedback, and glad you are having a good experience at Paragon. I hope you get a day off soon! Based on your feedback and that of others, we are looking to see what we can do about minimizing disruption of benefits when attorneys are off-project, which currently appears to be more a carrier issue. The vast majority of our attorneys do not experience a gap in benefits because their work is ongoing, but it is a good issue for us to research nonetheless. Stay tuned!

Pros

I have been working at Paragon for the last 3 years and have been quite happy with the work-life balance. I have the ability to craft a desired schedule that includes some telecommuting. Pay is competitive with other project-based companies. The internal Paragon staff are very responsive, personable, and really wonderful to work with.

Cons

There may be some times where there isn't a project available in one's practice area and that can be tough for the attorneys who need to work consistently. There could certainly be more PTO and I understand that Paragon has just added a limited amount for attorneys working on a more full-time schedule.

Thanks for your feedback! Very glad you are enjoying the work-life balance and have enjoyed your 3+ years with us. Paid vacation is actually available for both part-timers and full-timers, so please check-in with HR if you have further questions about this (you should see the balance on your paystub).

Back-fill for various attorneys on leave

Pros

Paragon offers excellent opportunities to work at interesting companies or on exciting projects that might otherwise be be difficult to land as a FTE.

Cons

As a contractor, you may receive work that is far below your abilities, which, of course, is the very nature of the job but can grow very tedious.

Thanks very much for the feedback, which is so helpful in us understanding what we are doing right and what we can do better. First, some clarification--our attorneys are W-2 employees of Paragon with full access to benefits, paid time off, MCLEs, and other perks. They are not contractors. In terms of level of work, it is indeed challenging given various circumstances and requirements of our attorneys to always find a perfect match between level of work and level of attorney. Paragon's differentiating factor is that we customize projects around an attorney's ideal requirements--how much they can be onsite, where, the maximum # of hours they want to work, etc. But of course there are always trade-offs, such that it is difficult to give all of our attorneys their ideal schedule and also their ideal work. I think the fact that our attorney retention rate is so high is an indicator that we are doing a pretty good job in this area. In addition, we work with a number of attorneys who have taken several years off from the practice of law, or who are trying to transition from one area of law to another. In those cases, there is a mutual understanding that the client may require the attorney to start-off at a lower level, but with the goal of bringing the attorney up as their skills develop, thereby giving the attorney a development opportunity they may have been very hard put to find somewhere else.
