Pros

There are so many good things. Number one for me is probably the flexibility it affords me - I am able to attend my childrens' school functions, etc. After that it is the quality of the work. The Paragon clients are an amazing group of high profile companies. You can tell Paragon cares about its employees, they listen. Company events are always top notch, great venues, great food, great swag. Colleagues are super smart and happy. It's just a generally a great company to work for. Finally our company continues to improve their benefits, which is a great thing.

Cons

The only con I can think of is that there may be times when you are off project, waiting for another and you wouldn't be paid at that time. If you have a tight budget or are a single bread winner you will have to be good at saving/budgeting. Although too, I think Paragon does a great job of organizing projects so attorneys are not typically off for that long and sometimes not at all. Also, benefits are not the same as with a traditional firm or corporation ... but you wouldn't expect them to be and the perk of flexibility by far outweighs this. If they continue to make improvements as well it will really help.

I'm glad you are having such a positive experience at Paragon. Since our inception over 8 years ago, we have added new benefits and perks every year, with the goal of making our overall compensation extremely competitive with (or in many cases better than!) traditional law firm or in-house jobs. As you said, together with the flexibility we afford our attorneys, we hope to make this a no-brainer in terms of a place for talented attorneys to continue challenging work while also having a meaningful life outside of work. We will, per your suggestion, always continue to look at ways in which we can improve comp and the overall experience for our attorneys. In terms of gaps in work, we have thankfully been extremely busy here at Paragon, such that very few of our attorneys will experience gaps between projects. Thanks for being part of the team!

Pros

The main benefit of Paragon is being able to be in-house, with relatively interesting work (fantastic companies as clients!!!), without working insane hours. Pay rates are excellent, but fixed (see Cons). If you work here, you can make more than you would at some Senior Counsel or above positions in-house and work 40 hours a week . . . guaranteed. Please know that the Cons below still don't change the fact that I think Paragon is a fantastic company to work for. You just need to know what you want. Definitely a great option for those who prioritize work-life balance.

Cons

A few cons, though many people would be able to live with these: fixed salary, no sick days, limited vacation time and so-so job security. Everyone makes the same hourly rate of pay (as far as I know), regardless of position. If you're upwardly mobile (financially) this may not be the position for you. However, as I said above, the pay is VERY generous. In-house you'd get sick days and 2-4 weeks paid vacation. No sick days and limited vacation. When you're unable to work, you don't get paid. It has encouraged me never to take a day off, which is a bit sad. But as long as you plan for this unpaid time off, you're fine. Kudos on beginning to address the time off benefit. It would be great if it could come up to match 2 week vacation + some sick time baseline. This work is project-based. Some projects last multiple years, some a few months. You must be OK with transitions. To some this is a pro, rather than a con. You just have to do good work and have faith that your next assignment will materialize.

Thank you for sharing your experience at Paragon, and for being part of our team! Just a note that any of our attorneys working in the city of San Francisco do receive notable sick leave, and we will be looking at sick leave for all attorneys for 2015. As you said (thanks!), we try to focus on maximum salary for our attorneys, since this seems to be what most people focus on when evaluating comp, and we know that hour-for-hour, we do better than most comparable law firm or in-house jobs. Between immense flexibility, salary, paid time off, contributions to benefits, bar dues, MCLEs, access to tickets to great events (including the Giants play-offs) and other social outings for our attorneys and their families (farm visits, chocolate tastings, and more!), we hope we're not only providing very competitive comp, but also building a unique community that our attorneys can be a part of for many years to come. In terms of job security, the majority of our attorneys have been at Paragon for multiple years, and continuously on project with little or few gaps. We actually feel that given the behavior of the current permanent job market, Paragon in some ways offers a more secure job environment than standard law-firm or in-house jobs. Of course, this is project-based work and we are customizing projects for the location and schedule that each attorney specifies, so unfortunately we cannot guarantee that there will not be gaps. But if you do good work and are in a core practice area, chances are you will have as much work as you need.
