Volatile and Divisive Management–Hale Patch

Pros

A great goal with great reporters and editors who are unfortunately undervalued.

Cons

The expectation is to work seven days a week at all hours of the day without a raise for years especially if you're not in HQ. This might be defendable if these hours were dedicated to actual journalism instead of clickbait. The main feedback you receive is reserved for not meeting PV goals. More upsetting is the childish antics of those at the highest level of management who engage in high school-esque politics and at times down-right inappropriate behavior. Promotions and layoffs are determined by favoritism which creates a culture of paranoia and backstabbing. Furthermore those with no journalism background should not be in charge of making decisions in that purview. The constant interference and shifting directives from the CEO stifles work and progress. Continued layoffs and egregious work/life balance placed on writers is what makes the company "profitable" if that's even true. Lip service of how "wonderful" company culture is does not make up for the way management treats its employees, which appears to be the strategy of the CEO and other management.

Pros

Work from home, and that's about it

Cons

Too many to list...awful management, zero communication, constant pressure to produce produce produce (hyperlocal news simply doesn't work that way), poor work life balance (I often worked 16 hour days/7day weeks--with no overtime paid-- and it was impossible to take vacation days or sick time), quantity matters more than quality (any decent journalist will not be able to stomach this concept), management employed harassing tactics to get your UV's up without giving you advice or support on how to do this, you had to find freelancers who would essentially work for free, high turnover, very immature and backstabbing colleagues ...the list goes on and on.
