Pros

Patelco consistently communicates a message of empowerment, ownership, and accountability, especially for retail leadership. The mission and member focus are genuine, and many employees care deeply about doing the right thing for members and each other. Teams at the branch level work hard and take pride in their service, often going above and beyond despite challenges.

Cons

While the message is to “run your branch like your own business,” retail leaders are not truly empowered to do so. Decision-making authority is highly centralized, limiting a manager’s ability to respond to the unique needs of their branch, staff, and community. This disconnect creates frustration when leaders are held accountable for outcomes without having the autonomy to influence them. Compensation does not align with the level of responsibility expected of retail leadership. Managers are responsible for staffing, performance, risk, compliance, member experience, and revenue goals, yet pay does not reflect the scope or complexity of these expectations. Pay equity and market competitiveness remain concerns across retail roles.

Good pay for location (still couldn't afford rent though), "One Team" mentality

Cons

Micromanaging (upper management), multiple campaigns for low payout (uneven pay between upper management & front-facing team members), weird PTO policies
