A Conscientious Career Choice

Pros

I'm the kind of person who thrives knowing that my actions have meaning. That's why I joined Pathways. I need to know that my work life is spent doing something that I can look back upon with a positive sense of accomplishment. Pathways gives me that. They have competitive salaries for the marketplace (and for being a non-profit). Recent hires are bringing with them a sense of professionalism and background that is truly improving the overall functioning, with better policies, communications, and more staff training. I'm feel very hopeful of my career growth potential and professional opportunities here.

Cons

As a small non-profit operating in the SF Bay Area, staff members are each doing the work of three people. (Definitely never a dull moment!) However, there is the overall feeling that the organization is in "reaction mode" (fighting fires) instead of "proactive mode" (effective planning), which can lead to frustration. A lot of decisions made are questioned and changed or reversed later--either by the originators or someone in senior management.

Pros

Good reputation, non-profit, local agency, good benefits (healthcare is free to full time employees), flexible hours, many people stay a long time, they try new ideas, opportunities to advance.

Cons

All home health and hospice has become super competitive and it affects the way they have to operate. Healthcare is changing really fast and so Pathways is changing too. I understand that it is necessary, but I don't like the pressures the new healthcare environment has created.

Most unprofessional outfit ever worked for.

Pros

Salary is competitive, a lot of food all the time around the building, work is not to demanding, management leaves you alone, you can take off when you want and come in late as often as you like and still keep your job.

Cons

They have no structure employees are allowed to take off, come in late, hang on cell phones during work hours. Upper management come in as they please. Rarely do they work their 40 hours a week. Unless you actually take a day off people do not get docked for the hours missed nor do they use their sick or vacation time to cover those hours. This is a non- for-profit organization and the funds they use to run this company is donated and I do not feel that it is right to not monitor employee activity. Employees claim they are busy. I have monitored this and employees are able to get there job done in aprox 4 hrs a day they work at a slow pace and management never has any idea what the employees are doing. I have seen a temp come in and work several months, no one monitored any of her work and actual reality the work she did was a complete waste of time and there was a waiting game involved do to the delay of her work and she was sitting on company time for almost a month with nothing to do while we paid the agency aprox $30hr. mistakes are handled by the employees and never brought to management attention. I am sorry to say that I would not suggest a loved one to reside or seek out any services with this company nor would seek employment. The company is dishonest and careless to say the least.
