Pros

Contact with animals.Pet owners are great.Great selection of products

Cons

District Managers take credit when things are going well and blame managers when metrics are NOT happening.Support from Human Resources regarding management concerns are ignored. Regional H.R Director has own agenda. District Managers are not trustworthy. Payroll is not sufficient to provide animals with proper care.Managers hope for warnings about impending corporate visits.Petco uses a band-aid approach to run stores.Store standards are NOT consistent throughout company. Too many rollouts and planogram changes.Never enough product to support advertised sales.

Pros

Entry level job. As a temporary job for high school students looking to make some summer money, this would be an okay place to look.

Cons

Any expertise in the animal field is completely overlooked - employees are 'trained' to Petco standards which are completely inadequate. Store focus becomes product oriented, not enough hours are provided to complete animal care, specialists are constantly working the register or stocking shelves, and the animal care SUFFERS. When senior management is notified of these issues (repeatedly), promises are made, but zero action is taken. Constant changes to planogram and store layout demand time and attention, and ultimately frustrate both the employees (who have to reorganize) and the customers (who can no longer find the products they're used to purchasing). High turnover rate due to emotional exhaustion.

Pros

PETCO has a genuine compassion for animals and their owners. The products and foods sold and recommended by the company are very high quality at reasonable prices. The company is not greedy and actually cares about its customers and their pets. It's also very rewarding to work for a company that supports and encourages adoption rather than purchase of new companion animals. PETCO donates proceeds many times throughout the year to shelters in need and follows through by hosting adoption days for the animals and recommending local shelters to customers interested in new pets. This is very admirable because the company chooses to do the right thing in supporting adoption where they could easily make more money off of selling the animals themselves. Working for PETCO makes you realize that there are successful businesses who actually care and stand behind what they're selling and they have the customer loyalty ratings to prove it. PETCO also has one of the most extensive training programs I've ever witnessed and countless opportunities to learn more about products, pets, and policies. They are constantly asking for employee feedback on new ideas, and continually keeping associates informed on new products. PETCO employees really know what they're selling and are given the knowledge to answer any customer questions or concerned.

Cons

The company does not pay much and does not raise salary enough in relation to increased job performance. A key holder makes very little more than a sales associate, and I can't imagine that management pays much better. You would have to really love working for the company to be able to stay with them for long.
