Pros

The people -- a lot of the employees here are good, caring people. The benefits are solid, although increasing in out of pocket cost. The pay is decent although less than others in the industry. Professional development (tuition reimbursement, internal development coursework, etc). They have a variety of locations throughout their service territory (Portland, Tualatin, Salem, Gresham, Beaverton, etc). Ability to have multiple careers without leaving the company if you play your cards right. Interesting things are happening within the utility space (climate change, renewable power, electric vehicles, potential for deregulation, etc).

Cons

Not flexible with regard to schedules or working from home -- most employees are not allowed to work from home/outside the office (managers believe they have to see you every day). Not flexible with regard to family friendly schedules (working condensed work weeks, reduced hours, etc). There is an overwhelming amount of change taking place with poor leadership to navigate it. Many people have been promoted into leadership positions when they do not possess the skills. Poor performers and poor managers are allowed to remain in their positions despite repeated complaints to higher level management, HR representatives, Ethics, etc. The executive leadership is not aligned, rigid, old-school, and out of touch with employees. The company values are lip service to an extent. There is a lack of trust between leadership and employees. They are a regulated monopoly and as such move slowly. Employee satisfaction continues to decrease and strong employees are leaving the company as the economy improves. There is a large percentage of the workforce that is retired on the job and riding out the next few years until they retire.

We appreciate your feedback, thank you for taking the time to write a review. Pay equity is important to us and we’re proud that PGE employees in the same role, with comparable work experience at the same work location, continue to earn a near-perfect dollar for dollar pay. Embracing diversity, equity & inclusion is one of PGE’s core values that guide our energy transformation work for Oregon. These values, combined with PGE’s Guiding Behaviors, help shape the way we do business and represent who we are as a company. We’ve outlined some of our DEI measures here: https://portlandgeneral.com/about/who-we-are/diversity-equity-and-inclusion. These are serious allegations, and we would like to investigate further. Whether you still work for PGE or have moved on, reporting these experiences is important to us to conduct an inquiry with the right information. Terrible environment for staff

Pros

Salary and 401k are competitive.

Cons

Exploitative managerial behavior - expecting staff to work incessantly because their lousy management leads to constant turnover. Way too many managers, who have absolutely no clue how to lead departments, support their staff, or stand up to senior management. Absolutely no leadership at any level. CEO bragged openly about "record high disconnects" at a staff meeting (during a heatwave, no less). That's who Oregonians are paying over a million dollars a year to...someone who thinks disconnecting power to people in need is a laughing matter. Truly shameful. Probably will not come as a shock, but women are paid less than men, and given fewer advancement opportunities.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate your feedback. Customers are important to us, and safely providing an essential service to customers and our communities is critical to PGE. And as an essential service provider, we are here to partner with customers and help them find the support they may need to navigate their bills and their energy use. We help customers find solutions that work for them. One program we offer to support customers is our Income-Qualified Bill Discount Program (portlandgeneral.com). The program offers ongoing, monthly financial help for income-qualified customers. We offer a variety of other payment options to support customers as well. We want to help our customers, especially if they are navigating challenging times. Pay equity matters. We analyze pay at PGE to help ensure employees receive equal pay for equal work based off a comparable level of experience, grade level, work location and their performance. We also comply with the Oregon Equal Pay Act during our offer process. If you have any other feedback you would like to pass on, please feel free to report your observations confidentially online to Ethics Point https://secure.ethicspoint.com/domain/media/en/gui/7710/index.htmlat any time or by calling their hotline at 866-384-4277.
