Once a great company

Pros

Efficiency driven, dedicated to finding great solutions to complex problems. Culture of change and growth designed which is dedicated to being the best in the industry. Outstanding training program, reflected in being consistently rated near the top of all customer service departments.

Cons

Right now, uncertainty. Premera used to be an extremely stable, dependable, and wonderful place to work. Over the last couple years, poor communication and aggressive restructuring has badly damaged employee confidence. Furthermore, while most employees are great to work with, it's getting harder to trust your boss. Prior to two years ago, almost everyone I knew loved their managers and leads. It feels like everyone is starting to look out for themselves more than for their teams now.

Premera Blue Cross Response

You make an excellent point. In order to ensure we keep the customer at the center of all we do, it is important to balance efficiency with excellence. Being efficient ensures we are stewards of our customers time and money. We must do so while also staying true to being the best in the business. Both are possible and we have the right team to do it! Thank you for your feedback. Premera is growing and learning every day. Your insight if valuable. Thank you!

Pros

Pretty good salary and benefits. They are not as good as they were a few years back though. Continually scaling these back for the newer employees. There are some really great people working there.

Cons

Starting a few years ago, the IT management fell in LOVE with painfully elaborate, laborious, bureaucratic procedure that pretty much takes up your whole day. If you miss any jot or tittle you need a direct CIO REPORT to get your work through. They call 'blackouts" (periods where NOTHING can be moved to production) at the drop of a hat. Productivity and morale is very low. IT management makes a great show of promoting "innovation". Most of us just laugh. How is innovation possible in such a culture? They are making a great show of implementing LEAN and agile processes, How you reconcile these methods with whole infrastructure departments full of dedicated bureaucrats. It is PROFOUNDLY painful to work there. SO why do I? I have good reason to endure it for now. You don't have to.

Losing Trust

Pros

I work for a great manager on a great team, and we're doing some cool stuff as a team. I really enjoy my direct coworkers and the connections I have made, and if not for the cons listed below, I could see working here long enough to retire. As of last week, I question my desire to work here long term. I will say that the comp is good (good base + decent bonus) and the PTO is decent (20 days PTO to start plus two personal holidays/year). The retirement options can't be beat - 401k match (nothing special on the percentage) AND a pension plan. There's lots of other useful perks as well - discount programs, EAC, etc.

Cons

I have lost trust in this company. It started when medical benefits doubled in cost last year (soon to be 4x what they were when I was hired) and continued recently on the announcement of converting employees within certain ranges of the office from telecommuter (full-time WFH) to hybrid (8 days in office/month). This is planned in two phases (10 miles and 30 miles) and will be calculated by some unknown method involving zip codes, not door to door. Living in Seattle means that you can't always travel in a straight line to get to your destination, and I think it's beyond foolish to require us to be in office for an arbitrary number of days per week when 1/3 to 1/2 of my time is spent in Teams meetings. Why does it matter if I'm at my desk at home or at YOUR desk in MLT? Does this mean you plan to stop offshoring and hire back local PNW folx as FTEs? Does this mean that our team members who are remote in other states will eventually be on the hunt for new jobs due to being unable to relocate? People were hired remotely as telecommuters and have roots in their communities; this smacks of false pretenses and it's deeply unappreciated.
