Pros

People at the working level are AMAZING! Very collaborative environment. Good work-life balance. Nice option to not have to commute to Seattle or Bellevue if you live up north. Decent benefits and fair but not "competitive" pay for the Seattle market.

Cons

A technological dinosaur. Outdated systems and years and years of technical debt that needs to be dealt with to stay competitive. Large institutional barriers between Operations and IT teams. Lots of recent layoffs which were handled poorly. Culture of change is developing into a culture of fear. Sad to see the company change due to competitive pressures and drive out core pieces of what built the culture there. Risk of losing national accounts (Starbucks, Microsoft, Aamzon) and pressure from the ACA/Individual Market is causing lots of fear and uncertainty in the market and at Premera. Expect more layoffs this year (2016).

Premera Blue Cross Response

As we’ve shared with employees, change can be tough, even when it’s for all the right reasons. Business decisions that affect our employees are made thoughtfully and support Premera’s commitment to our customers. Healthcare is in a new world, and we’re becoming a new Premera. We recognize that there is more work to be done throughout the enterprise, breaking down barriers and improving communications. We’re listening to our customers and investing in technology to improve their experience, whether they’re online, on the phone, or receiving care. Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback.

Not a Health Company

Pros

Total compensation package, which includes an annual bonus for salaried employees, is market competitive. The benefits package was excellent until the July 1, 2015 plan year. At this time, Premera began its high deductible HSA full replacement strategy.

Cons

Premera positions itself as a health company but does very little to support the well-being of associates. The new CEO has abandoned employee wellness, cancelling the incentive programs frequently mentioned as an employment perk and bringing smoking/tobacco use back to campus. These changes are hypocritical of an organization that preaches healthy living through its various brands and sells wellness services to clients.

Pros

Flexible schedules, competitive package (401K, PTO, pension)

Cons

Slow to change, IT very behind, new CEO cut jobs. Many pockets of old style leadership. Specific areas are over working employees. They have a tendency to only listen to specific people. Pay is not competitive unless you negotiate upon hiring Poor communication from upper leadership.
