Great people, bad management

Pros

People are great. Benefits are really good except pay is a little low.

Cons

No overarching identity between the leaders of the organization. As a matrix structure, often people do little across departments to help each other out. Lots of blame gets thrown around and in the end, I think there is more drama in upper management about who is going to get credit rather than on making good choices. Look out for managers who delay inevitable decision making. More than likely they've been there for a while and are trying to maintain the status quo to not get skinned if something goes wrong.

Good Company for Experience

Pros

Most areas allow for a decent Work / Family balance. Obviously some times are busier than others, but I think that is the same for any employer. Flexible scheduling and Work from Home capabilities.

Cons

Benefits are mediocre especially given the fact that you work FOR the insurance company. A lot of the work that you do is only being done because it is on an executive's bonus plan so that they get paid their bonus. Even if the work doesn't make the most sense it will still be done (and possibly reversed once it is done) so that line item can have a check mark on it as completed by the end of the year. There is no Cost of Living increase in pay. There is an annual review and the raise if any is based on performance, or at least management's perception of performance. If you want to get a raise of any kind you pretty much need to apply for different positions and transfer around the company. This method also means that anyone that has been in their position for a long amount of time will be making less than a newly hired associate, as the overall pay matrix IS updated to reflect the market cost of living on an annual basis. Because of the review process, it encourages employees to manipulate each other so that they themselves look better in the end.

A mixed bag...

Pros

Company has sincere aspirations to be a leader in the healthcare industry. Beautiful campus next to the the Interurban Trail in MLT - great commute for folks in the north end. A good stepping stone in my career.

Cons

Management does not trust desk level folks. Coordination and cooperation between different areas almost non-existent. Technology is not current. Too many projects, often with dubious ROI or in support of some management goal that gets someone a bonus but only minimally moves the company forward. Pay and benefits for IT are below market. Duck poop on the sidewalks doesn't get cleaned up.
