The Fall of an Empire

Pros

Pyxl was a great company for many years. The talent, capabilities and culture were top-notch for so long. I was able to personally learn so much from other disciplines in addition to my own. I was able to work on incredibly large projects across multiple industries, soak it all in and have used that knowledge to pour into numerous opportunities.

Cons

While the pros were good for many years, the last 2-3 years of Pyxl have represented the fall of a great empire. Drama and layoffs came in via the Trojan Horse of an interoffice relationship made permissible by unannounced handbook policy changes. This is just one example from the steady stream of lies fed directly to us from the top. What once was a strong organization with over 60 employees across 4 offices is now in ruins and barely an organization at all. Operations have now consolidated down into one final office with around 10 employees (don't believe what you see on the website, half of those people are either part time or have left and never removed). You don't have to read very far into previous reviews to understand which of them are real, and which are the remaining management members desperately trying to salvage the pitiful remains of “culture” with their pressured (or fake) reviews. With the crumbling of an empire, comes the downfall of its ruler. While Pyxl stood many years on solid management pillars, this ruler brought a hurricane of destruction with him on the guise of "shaking things up.” He repeatedly came back to "run Pyxl because nobody can run it as good as the owner" but in reality was due to his serial quitting of many failed outside business ventures (which was also a really good way of milking his friends for marketing work and funneling that money from their pocket right into his). While "getting rid of time tracking", "getting one of those cool Starbucks machines" or "pushing an employee out of the boat" made him feel like he was the emperor, in reality it only made him appealing to those too inexperienced to see through the bull. At that point, Pyxl could only survive with high churn and endlessly bringing fresh new talent (still in school), putting them on "Intern Island" and letting them do client work. To give some actual data, in the past 2 years, they've lost 1 CEO, 1 COO, 1 President, 2 VPs, 5 managing directors, 4 functional directors, 2 offices and every bit of credibility it had left. If that doesn't tell you all you need to know about Pyxl, nothing will. In the end, was it ever really an empire at all, or just a fantasy one written on fake Ritz Carlton stationary with a pen still wet from signing the last “deal” filled with fake promises?

Employees Treated as Commodities

Pros

You work with talented people and have access to a variety of digital marketing platforms (typical with any agency). Great place to learn and grow your career. Developers and graphic designers were top-notch and could hang with the best at any agency.

Cons

Complete lack of direction or processes in management. Also, management prioritized sales and increasing business over addressing the clients' needs. Pyxl offered more office perks than actual benefits. Consistently worked 60-hour weeks equating to a terrible work-life balance.

BEWARE- Immoral Quagmire with Non-compete!

Pros

It's hard to find something to put here but I'll go with "Sometimes you have to know darkness in order to appreciate the light."

Cons

Management tries to actively trap people into staying, sending threatening letters to other agencies in the area reminding them of Pyxl's non-compete agreement. Despite that, everyone left because they realized the "rocket ship" "growth opportunities" at Pyxl are limited to those interested in a non-traditional ride, disgusting 80% of their staff and resulting in a mass departure of so many people, they've had to 'rearrange the desks' again, removing an entire section and replacing them with sofas. (Are you going to believe them when they say they needed a THIRD client entertainment area?) People would rather be unemployed then work for Brian Winter (owner) and Managers who don't even save the talk until the locker room and who blatantly disregard conflicts of interest and reward inappropriate behavior. Ask about getting promotions in the Communication's Department! Red Flag - When only one person submits for a huge promotion in a marketing world where competition is fierce everywhere else, you know something's wrong. They clearly have an initiative to raise their Glassdoor reviews and you can bet it's not with actual improvements.

Pyxl Response

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. I'd be happy to respond to your points: -Non-competes. Like most agencies, we have non-compete agreements that our employees sign when they decide to join our team. It really isn't that unusual. When employees leave, we remind them of the agreements they entered into when deciding to work at Pyxl. We're really no different than any other company in our industry, or most companies that are in industries where their business is their people. -Office decor. We enjoy rearranging our offices time-to-time. It's Spring, so it's a great time to do it! We've recently done that in Nashville and in Knoxville. In both cases the decision was employee driven and we facilitated making that happen. You no longer work here, so we're not sure why you're upset about our teams moving their desks around? -Promotions. We've had several employees receive promotions in the last year, including several this calendar year. The Communications Team, specifically, has had three promotions in the last 30 days. It is our fastest growing line of business and we’re proud of the team we have and the amazing work they do. We're sorry if you weren't able to fulfill your career aspirations while at Pyxl, but we're confident that many of our employees today are experiencing career growth and promotions that rewards their hard work. -Personal issues. Again, we recognize you may have not have had the experience you wanted while at Pyxl. We also recognize your post appears to be more of a personal issue with the owner, than anything else. Our owner doesn't shy away from making tough decisions when it comes to what is best for the company, even when those decisions aren't popular. However, he is known for helping out employees in times of need, even when no one else knows about it. We've been around for 10 years and we have a lot of happy employees and customers. Just like anything in life, sometimes things don't work out, but we all move on and pursue other interests.
