Some Good, Some Bad

Pros

- Good benefits. - Some interesting research being done. - Generally chill office environment, at least pre-COVID.

Cons

- If you're support, expect to be treated like the help. Your contributions are going to be as much about managing egos/holding your tongue than about using your skills. Some researchers are great, but you'll have to treat those who aren't exactly the same as if they were kind and polite. - Salaries are decent but not great for the expensive office locations. - There's little room to grow, so just know coming in that where you start is likely very close to where you'll end up, at least in terms of pay.

Awful middle management, stressful internal labor market

Pros

Smart people; (some) interesting problems; flexibility (esp if you can bring in moneys)

Cons

Reliant on soft money; stressful "internal labor market"; mafias esp in middle management looking out for one another and deciding your fate; some awful projects common (e.g., contract work for DHS)

Pros

RAND works on amazing projects and the assistants are nice. They also have good benefits.

Cons

When interviewed, RAND gave me a salary amount. The day I was accepted I was told I would be paid hourly. When I started I had to track my time in 15 minute increments. You only get paid if there is a project to bill to, so in slow times, you aren't getting paid. I was hired for a full time job, but there wasn't enough work on any given day.
