Pros

RIT is a great place for people who aren't looking to rise up or excel. It's a very slow paced business with opportunity to work with cool things and enjoying the benefits.

Cons

RIT is a place where you can go nowhere fast. Many coworkers are RIT alumni who never seemed to quite make the transition to the working world. Not a ton of ambition for those who choose to stay in academia.

Pros

RIT is a university that is constantly striving for high quality education beyond the classroom. Thus, there are plenty of opportunities for people who see a university as not just a workplace but as a place where they can contribute to help educate people and help shape the future of its students. Plus, there is always a possibility to continue learning not only while at work but also after work. I think the benefit package is quite good and since RIT is determined to grow and keep up with the best universities in the country I am sure there will always be interesting job opportunities.

Cons

Despite all the good things and the good benefits package that comes with being employed at RIT I think the payment level as such could be higher. That is true at least for Non-Faculty. I cannot say much about Faculty, but administrative staff could be payed more competitively. Other than that there is nothing else that one should considerate when starting at RIT. Oh ya, at lot of people complain about weather, too long winter and too much rain but that is more Rochester specific than employer specific. Again, I can only recommend RIT as a potential employer.

Pros

The benefits to fulltime employees are second to none for a typical institute. Those faculty and staff that have had recent career experience outside of the institute are a valuable asset to the teaching and technical ability of the institute. It would seem though that the Institute is moving away from the Technical Institute model and is moving towards a Research University model which threatens the well-versed faculty and staff on RIT's campus and wishes to replace them with heavy theories and antiquated knowledge of PhDs in fields that don't yet have them! Other than that, compensation and benefits are amazing.

Cons

There are times when the management does not understand or does not wish to understand the technical matters at hand and problems involved with them. Other times orders come from above that are not fully understood by those giving them, and no technical assistance is sought. I have not been impressed with the several meetings I have been asked to attend as a subject matter expert only to be told that my opinion is valid but management would like to go another way. Faculty and staff are also knowledgable, but have not ben rotated into the field as they are supposed to be.
