Pros

+ Strong reputation and experienced managers facilitate consistent workload from top US contract research clients like NIH, EPA, etc. + Stable 9-5 work setting (with telecommuting possibilities) with great employee amenities at RTP (and pension system) conducive for long cozy career in research + Well-tested internal staff-research proposal mechanisms and successful technology commercialization programs liven things up + Super-friendly staff and consistent, transparent employee-manager relations and review process

Cons

- Having trouble breaking from that government client base as it contracts - Conservative approach makes that process difficult, e.g. moving into emerging markets late and taking the US business approach there - Challenges with tapping potential of young staff who aim to address those issues

Pros

Flexible schedule and alot of independence and trust from upper management. A nice mix of working solo but still having tons of smart people around you to ask questions or help you figure things out when you get stuck.

Cons

Hard to move up without advanced degree
