Pros

Competitive salaries, on the high end if you work in NC Potential for interesting work Potential for creating your own niche if you can win your own work

Cons

Management is arbitrary and unaccountable, no people management skills Backstabbing behind the scenes can make life unpleasant Program areas are siloed and compete rather than collaborate It was difficult to help junior and mid-level staff develop their careers or grow within the company. The best way to advance yourself is to leave.

Pros

Pretty good pay for what you do. Good benefits. Not expected (at BA level) to work over 40 hours per week (see one exception in Cons). Nice campus. Lots of little perks.

Cons

Lack of investment in "junior staff". Lack of respect for non-graduate degree holders -- see previous sentence. Can be very difficult to manage workload unless you have one primary supervisor. I have several supervisors and all expect you to drop everything to address their needs. Staff is expected to donate time for staff meetings.

Pros

- Some of the best financial tracking systems of any IP. Financial, MEL, and operations - Hard working regional teams - Supportive of telework

Cons

- While RTI was previously one of the strongest USAID IPs, they have dropped in winning awards the last few years. Because of this, people are overworked and refuse to hire additional staff in support teams. Expect to be significantly overworked and burnt out, and expect the culture to support this lifestyle. - Turnover is very high in lower to mid positions because senior management is horrific. There are Managers, Directors, and other Sr management folks that everyone knows are bad performers, lazy, and cruel, but they just say "we have to work with them." - You will feel unsupported, more so than in any job you've had before. The culture of shame and blame is significant here, Management *always* seeks for a person to blame. You will spend so much time on that rather than discussing how to improve systems or processes that help everyone. - No opportunities for growth. You'll notice on Linkedin how most SPAs have been in their role for 5+ years. RTI doesn't do promotions,
