Good people. Pretty campus. Good benefits.

Cons

Pay is lower than it should be for most positions when compared to similar sized universities. There's a disconnect in communication and understanding between the upper levels of administration and the lower-mid levels. Political atmosphere means there's always the possibility of one's performance being hampered by interdepartmental squabbles and petty disagreements between administrators (VP's, Deans, Directors.) Limited opportunity for advancement in most circumstances.

Pros

Many genuinely nice people. Great town and natural environment for raising a family and enjoying the outdoors. Great local school system. Very quiet and safe, if that is Ok for you.

Cons

Genuinely nice people are sometimes nice because they are not very well qualified or very motivated. The faculty who aspire to improve the university, through high-expectations teaching and conducting respected research are not rewarded for their efforts. The incoming students are at the lowest end of the qualifications spectrum for Virginia universities. When you mix many weak students with a handful of bright, motivated students, you have a very difficult teaching job.
