Great mission but it stops there!

Pros

This mission of the organization is amazing and I felt honored be hired but once I got there, it was no where close to what I expected. Kudos to the employees that are actually passionate about their work.

Cons

Where should I even start? Upper management is clearly separate from the rest of the organization. You could be carrying on a conversation with a co-worker and an upper manager would step right in front of you (back to you, like you were not even there) and carry on a conversation with your co-worker. They pass you in the hallway like you don't even exist and forget bringing ideas or concerns to them. Worse than upper managment, is the hr department. They are untrained and unprofessional. It's like they just make up things as they go along. The hiring process is a joke. Trying to get benefits is like pulling teeth. Working with hr is a challenge to say the least. And where would that trickle down from? Upper hr management. Surprise, surprise.

Pros

I found the organization to be a great working environment with great benefits. Staff are professional, honest and are working at RA for the right reasons. The opportunity of working with great companies and seeing the industries that Rainforest Alliance engages is a wonderful benefit. The job will be what you make of it as management does not have much time for oversight.

Cons

The organization does not tend to invest in their workers much aside from initial training. It is very easy to hit a ceiling when it comes to career growth. My best advice to a new hire is to explore all avenues while considering other divisions within the organization for growth. Fighting for rights as an employee would be career limiting at this organization. Human Resources is present to protect the organization liability. Decisions for advancement are subjective and have been made poorly behind closed doors by this organization in the past.

Ok benefits, incompetent management

Pros

Employees care for and believe on the mission. Good benefits. Great centrally situated location. Opportunities for travel to Latin America and Africa.

Cons

Highly political, incompetent management team. The organization suffers from corporate ADHD, as they can't concentrate on one thing for more than days or weeks. The one department that I would exonerate would be the Communications department. If you read the book "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team", this is a great example of a company that's highly dysfunctional. Few high level managers are highly dictatorial and very insecure. Lots of voluntary and involuntary employee turnover and burn out. Really old building, elevators are always breaking down.
