Pros

Organization is focused on a great mission. Employees are provided with excellent benefits including plenty of paid time off, 401(k) matching, pretty good insurance, etc. There is a fair amount of autonomy in the positions.

Cons

Upper and middle management have no real background in business, which is required at an organization of this size. This causes problems all over including poor focus on core areas, ignoring growing problems, etc. As others have said, there is a huge disconnect from those positions and more entry level staff. The largest issue is a complete lack of career advancement opportunities. You will not get promoted unless you fight tooth and nail for it, and even then it will take years. Managers often do not think about the needs of their employees and are only looking for performance metrics.

Pros

The mission is critical and the field work is high quality. Benefits and compensation are fair and often generous. Work-life balance is okay, most over time is voluntary.

Cons

Although the new President is making progress in the right direction, lack of management skills and manipulation at the senior level management is the largest, long-term and structural problem at the organization. It trickles down to every aspect.

Pros

The mission, which is to try to get forestry, agricultural, tourism, and other businesses to operate in an eco-friendly way and get consumers to buy eco-friendly products and services, is great.

Cons

The Rainforest Alliance is the most unprofessional organization for which I have ever worked. At no other organization were managers so much more interested in comfort and accommodation than in doing things well. At no other organization was there so much of an emphasis on self-promotion over furthering the mission. At no other organization did a meeting break into a half hour discussion of women's clothing or start with the person leading the meeting asking if anyone had any good gossip to share. You really can't expect to have any sense of accomplishment or feel like you're making a difference. You have to accept that you're mostly just going through the motions.
