Safe Steady Employment

Pros

Work is generally steady Opportunity to work on interesting projects Good flexibility in work schedule Good co-workers AMAZING support for Military Reservist who must get involuntarily called up for Title 10 duty -- Raytheon provides differential pay

Cons

Not exactly the most cutting edge technology Do not always get the best engineers in the industry -- we are not Google/Apple/Facebook and able to pick up the cream of the crop Hurting for talented engineers and we lose out to competitors on good talent Salary not the best relative to industry (you are trading secure, steady employment for lower salary) Benefits took a hit with UTC merger Promotions can be hard to come by Senior-level engineers can essentially "hide" and not put out senior-level quality of work

Pros

- Stable employment - Some opportunity to move within the company - Decent benefits

Cons

- Opportunities are based largely on office politics - Management is incentivized to hit financial numbers and seemingly nothing else, so incidents of true leadership intersecting with authority are few and far between - Motivation consists largely of threats of firing for being untruthful in time reporting (all stick, no carrot) - Upper management as of the merger makes comments that touch on political topics and obviously lean one way, but they consistently deny the issue of their bias - Top-down management - Career development is not substantively supported - Maintaining a security clearance is an intrusive hassle

Pros

Pay is better than most defense industry companies. 401k match is nice after a year and vested by 3. Health bennies are good and cheap compared to other companies. Decent PTO. 3 weeks paid parental. Yearly bonus.

Cons

The amount of red tape this company has in place to get something done is absurd. Don’t bother applying for a Subcontracts job. VP thinks buyers and SubK are the same. This is nothing more than a PR placement job. You’ll make zero decisions. They are all made for you by management or worse, Material Program Managers (MPM). Apply for MPM and skip being a PO placer. You’ll never be included on the front end decision making. You’ll have to just live with the horrendous decisions made by MPM’s who know literally zero about supply chain and the FAR. You will have 10-15 of these ill equipped MPM’s E-mailing and IM’g you daily asking is it done yet like a small child. They don’t grasp the concept of having SubK involved in the early stages and they’ll just dump incomplete PR’s to you with one sentence SSJ’s and look at you crossed eyed when you ask for documentation to support a SS decision. If you can’t beat them, might as well join them. Stay away from SubK unless you want to be a glorified buyer that has to sit there and do what your told.
