RealSelf is heading in a scary direction

Pros

- The industry is really interesting, I learned a lot about medical aesthetics during my time here. If you’re curious about the field, or want to dive deeper, this could be a good fit. - I worked with a lot of really smart, talented people on the team. The caliber is pretty high, and it pushed me to want to learn and be better as well. - The benefits are generally competitive. Good health insurance coverage, generous PTO, etc.

Cons

- The new CEO is dangerous. He is methodically pushing out every executive that’s not his buddy from a former job, and regularly makes disparaging comments about former employees. It comes across as classless and cruel. He’s also open and willing to abandon RealSelf’s core values to make a quick dollar. Under his leadership I’m concerned about the future and direction of the company. - There’s no career pathing. Having conversations about my future at RealSelf felt like pulling teeth. There’s no transparency about what different options are available to you or others on your team, there’s no support in trying to find the resources that you need in order to succeed. Getting approval for promotions is quite a lengthy ordeal, and it leads to people leaving as they are unable to take their next step at RS.

I am glad to see that overall you had a good experience at RealSelf during your tenure and you are right the people at RealSelf whether long standing or brand new are like no other company I have been a part of. I do need to push back a bit. The word “dangerous” is extremely unfair. Not only is our CEO a people first CEO, RealSelf is seeing growth in revenue, traffic and expansion that we have either never seen or not seen in awhile and much of this is due to decisions/risks made by him directly. Also of note, it is natural in a company our age and stage that when there is change in top leadership there are changes in overall structures throughout an organization. Even through COVID we have been and are investing in our experience and our people. It’s true that we have hired a lot of new people and in fact, over 65% of the company (over 100 new people) have been hired in the last 9 months from around the country. While it is a CEO’s number one job at any company to recruit, the vast majority of our new hires came in from the amazing efforts of our Recruiting Team. In terms of recognizing great work and promoting people, that’s something we take very seriously. Unlike other companies, we don’t constrain promotion opportunities to once or twice per year. We have those discussions regularly, and in the last 9 months we have promoted about 25% of the company. We also have robust Career Pathing across all Tech teams that is public to anyone interested in learning more and as mentioned at the 2/24 All Company Stand-up, Non-Tech Career Pathing is under way and will be completed in 2021 as well as Career Development drop-ins (for all employees) that start in 2 weeks. Reviews such as this one, give us a chance to take a pause and reflect on the work we do and have important discussions, so for that I appreciate the opportunity.

Pros

Remote work from home is done in a healthy way. Lots of communication each week. The product is unique and helpful to those who use it. The health benefits are excellent. There is a higher gender balance than in most companies. Many women in leadership.

Cons

The executive team is a joke at this company. Unless you are in their inside group of where they've previously worked, forget being heard or taken seriously. The CEO, vice presidents and other senior leaders say they like feedback and that they listen but if you challenge their way of thinking or if you have an opposing thought, you are dismissed, disregarded, or made to feel as if your opinion doesn't matter. It's like a high school click that only likes you if you're like them or think exactly like them. Its the stereotypical bro club except women are included if the bros like you. The company is not focused on the customer at all, they just want to make money and sales and are only going for the short term gains and not sustainability. People are scared to say anything because they will be seen as combative and they are also afraid to give anonymous feedback because people who give anonymous feedback are mocked and seen as cowards behind management doors. It's a lose-lose scenario for sustaining growth. They are in denial about the state of their union, unless you are in the bro club. Then you're golden.

Well that review is a bummer. I am disappointed to hear this feedback as it’s counter to most of our glassdoor reviews and also our recent engagement survey. If you are comfortable, I’d appreciate it if you could drop me/anyone/HR a slack to discuss your feedback so we can have a conversation about it. Best, James

Pros

Good work/life balance in the company.

Cons

Dog friendly office and office perks are not the only criterion for ‘good work culture’. During my time at Realself I experienced mobbing, so good luck fighting for acceptance. Lack of direction and ever changing priorities are some of the other challenges for the working teams.
