Pros

Benefits are great. Decent amount of time off, nice bonus, and good work-life balance, depending on your department and position.

Cons

Middle and upper management are very clique-ish; either you're in with them, or you're on the outs. In my experience, it has less to do with your work performance than with who you're friendly with. Formal training is virtually nonexistent. My training consisted of looking over someone's shoulder for a week or two, then I was expected to perform all of these tasks pretty near flawlessly. The vision that the company's CEOs have is really inspirational, but it is mostly pie-in-the- sky, because management isn't effective at implementing these ideas. Most of these ideas do not make it past the welcome lunches that all new employees must attend. There is no consistency regarding standards and expectations. Your work and how it is evaluated may differ vastly from day to day, and from person to person. Group managers are often too close with their project managers. This closeness, aside from just being unprofessional, often leads to group managers being unable to form objective and unbiased opinions on their project managers' performance, and their reviews of junior staff. Minorities do not fare well at Rho. There are very few people of color at the company, and virtually none in leadership positions. Most of them that I have spoken with feel constantly under siege, and many are planning to leave or have left already. As other commenters have noted, the HR department is underhanded and untrustworthy.

Pros

Flexibility, especially for working parents.

Cons

The company culture, especially on the federal side of the company, is toxic. The “basement people” have worked there since the company was created in the founders basement. It becomes increasingly obvious that if you are in their good graces, you will be rewarded; if you are not, you will be gaslit into believing you are the worst employee in the room. Employees and managers will talk about the family culture to your face and gossip behind your back. The company prides itself on using its own systems and methods (all of them have some cheesy “Rho” pun in the name), I feel that any experience I did gain at this company was not applicable when I went to a normal CRO.
