One of the top schools in the country but it's run like a mom and pop shop.

Pros

Privately funded, so some job security. Decent benefits. Good work-life balance.

Cons

Internal processes and practices are ancient. No room for growth. No appreciation for quality employees. Unclear career path. The pay is not competitive, except for the executives, and remains stagnant. HR policies that would make a real HR exec cringe. Extreme nepotism with regard to hiring.

Problems with HR and Administration

Pros

Good Faculty and good students.

Cons

Administration and HR are terrible. Racism and power-play exist in a big way. Watch out or your boss can keep praising you all the way and submit a 'Do Not Hire' on you when you leave without informing you and without having to rationalize their decision or show that they tried to alert you to the issues or ask you to improve. HR will not truly investigate a complaint an employee makes against unfair treatment by a boss. Subsequently HR will block you from applying for open positions. Something is terribly wrong and needs to be fixed with this system.

Pros

Great location in the heart of Houston. Wonderful camaraderie amongst entry-level employees. Highly knowledgeable and helpful middle management. If you are willing to stay, promotions are available.

Cons

Very little training. With very high turnover, it was difficult to find someone with reliable answers. Senior management showed little regard for entry-level employees. Prohibitive office structure and many communication issues. Huge time demands compared to admission counselors at other universities.
