Mission and execution out of alignment

Pros

They have an inspiring mission. The people I worked with were ambitious and smart. I learned a lot from my colleagues and I learned a lot on my feet. I got to do a wide range of things that I had no experience with so it was a great training ground.

Cons

The founder is manipulative and disrespectful -- a lion in sheep's clothing. He inserts himself in every aspect of the business (even the minute details). There's no autonomy and he is great at making people feel unsupported and competitive with each other, and it trickles down to every level of the company. Goals change constantly, and generally the approach was unfocused. There was a lot of start and stopping, and unrealistic goals given the lack of resources. Raises are very few and far between, and you have to basically threaten to quit in order to get one.

Pros

- Great people, so long as they are not in charge of anything. - Great hours, you don't really have to work.

Cons

- Terrible CEO / Founder. Aka "The Monster". This came up in interviews when I was leaving, no one thinks highly of this guy. - Leadership was promoted based on being lawyers or loyal to the monster. Too many lawyers, too few doers. - Features added to the site are done not based off of any real data, but rather what the monster wants. - So much process... so many meetings...

Pros

The people you're in the trenches with/coworks are wonderful. Unlimited PTO, 401k match at 3% is low but at least it's there.

Cons

You may not have a job tomorrow. Rocket Lawyer has had many rounds of layoffs since late 2022 through 2023. Those who were spared are worked to the bone. In 2023, they started offshoring engineering positions to Brazil to pay 20% the salary. So, good news for Brazilians I guess. Any kind of "profit" is because they've slashed people count. Salaries are under market rate. Many years without a raise even with outstanding performance reviews. Upper management is completely delusional. Priorities shift wildly. Forget about actually shipping a project. You spend week/months on something and it's almost done only to be suddenly told to drop everything because the CEO saw something shiny and said all hands on deck for something else entirely.
