Pros

The compensation and health benefits were good compared to other companies in Boston The cafeteria was good and resonably priced

Cons

When I first started working at Ropes 6 years earlier it was an amazing place to work - people were friendly, professional and generally happy. Then there was changes to upper management with a new CEO who promoted a few internal staff that literally made the place a nightmare to work at. People were afraid of coming into work each day with the fear of being let go, and any small mistakes that were made led to people blaming eachother and just turned plain nasty. One chief at the company should never have been promoted as she has the worst people and managment skills that I have EVER witnessed. She is rude, unprofessional and down right mean and she does not know how to motivate staff in a positive way she belives that fear will movtivate employees to do what she wants. They kept adding layers and layers of middle management and implemented new policies and procedures to make the simpliest tasks incredible difficult to complete. There is no regard for work-life balance or professional development opportunities for staff - that department was eliminated. The lying and sneaky behaviors from upper managment was not only ruining my professional life but also negetively impacting me personally and I knew that it was time to leave regardless of the state of the economy.

Pros

Offices in the Pru are nice. Too bad they didn't upgrade technology when they upgraded space.

Cons

Glaciers form and melt faster than management decision making processes. Change implementation is a haphazard mess, with no true leaders, mutually exclusive priorities, personality contests and a near insurmountable preference for "but that's the way we've always done it".

Pros

Employees within my team are quite friendly and open to sharing their knowledge, cross-training, and working well with each other. The firm is very open to offering training to their employees, and attending conferences / seminars in order to grow their expertise.

Cons

The team I work on has no sense of team building, team respect, encouragement, praise, etc. They always remind you of people whom they have let go ("laid off", "fired", etc.) in the past and subtly let you know that, at any time, you could be next. My direct management had no understanding or desire to learn about what our department does, yet they spent countless hours macro-managing the minutia of our day-to-day activities. They would over promise then berate the team when we would under-deliver. My manager also speaks in appropriately to the team (for example, making very personal statements about team members, such as, with regarding to their dating habits, personal activities, etc.). My manager would say one thing that was encouraging, yet reviews were horrendously worded. You would speak in confidence with management, yet later the management would tell other team members what was said, thereby creating a rift between the team. Very inappropriate behavior for management. You are expected to attend after-hours events and if you don't, it will show up noted on your review.
