Pros

The salaries at Ryerson are decent.

Cons

The benefits leave a lot to be desired. There is no sick time policy and the vacation policy is confusing and uncompetitive. People in management positions tend to micro-manage and do not give positive feedback. Union employees are treated preferentially. Technologically speaking, this company is a joke; they still use a DOS-based payroll system.

Pros

Ryerson is a good company to break into business to business sales with. The main entry level sales position is Inside Sales Representative and in this role you will receive a "fair" amount of training to be effective in your job. Ryerson's employees are GREAT people. Employees will have a pretty good benefit package. If you do get a job at Ryerson, soak up 2 years of experience max. and move to a better paying industry.

Cons

In 2007 Ryerson was purchased by a private equity group, Platinum Equity. Back when Ryerson was publicly held, owned by Inland Steel, or ISPAT they took much better care of their employees. There are very few opportunities for advancement and the lines will usually be long within this organization.

Pros

size of company, age of company, and capital resources all allow for very secure employment if you are willing to do anything they want you to. Wages are decent, and bonuses can pay out pretty nice.

Cons

The large size of the company causes some bureaucracy. You must be willing to work occasional weekend and evening overtime, without exemption for almost any reason. The parent company (Platinum Equity) likes money, so at this point, with the economic conditions being the main factor, anything can happen.
