Horrible company to work for

Pros

SAIC did start with competitive pay and benefits for it's new employees. The hiring process was quick, efficient, and responsive.

Cons

Management treats employees poorly. If they don't personally like you they will find a reason to terminate you and it will have nothing to do with your quality of work. Personal friends are rewarded. High turnover rate because of previous description. Poor yearly performance reviews. Not very thorough in time spent or explanation to employees. Management(who are required to own stock in company) and CEO/Board of Trustees make decisions based solely on raising price of stock. Jobs are lost easily from this. Small businesses/subcontractors are put out of my business by them continuously buying out workers only to cut those employees loose after their purpose is served. Large segments of non-management workforce had to endure pay cuts, despite stock increase.

Pros

Good leave/holiday benefits. Cost for medical insurance is mediocre. The company has a great core value and is hopefully going back in the right direction. Since the split with Leidos, they don't seem to care much about the employee, just the bottom dollar.

Cons

SAIC does not value their employees or the knowledge they gain, nor do they compensate them for it. In the years I've been with SAIC, I've only received one pay increase for merit, the rest were small cost of living increases. I went to my manager with an issue and was actually told "Life isn't fair, it is what it is. Just deal with it." WOW. I was speechless. Which is why I'm writing this.

Great place to gain experience for the real world

Pros

Defense contractors are focused on simply filling positions and keeping these positions filled. If you're a new or inexperienced software developer, then it's a smart strategy to gain the expertise you'll need when applying to the private sector. We call the private sector the "real world" as corporations are measuring product and not filled positions.

Cons

Management has no idea what products or services their employees provide. As long as the Government client is not complaining then all is well. One SAIC manager told a co-worker to "shut up and count your money" after she complained that the government client berated her. My advice, get in, acquire some skills, and get out. The only exception will be if they place you with a fair and professional government customer, because essentially, the government is your true management team.
