Pros

SEIU is a great place to work. But like any large organization there are lots of internal politics which often affect the work that gets done - or fails to get done. As well as the decision making when it comes to making political decisions that affect the union as a whole. Working with the members is the best part.

Cons

Def a lot of long hours and plenty of travel depending on where you are work. Sometimes, change within the union is difficult.

Organizing with new and interesting people. Health Plan and Pension are good.

Cons

Long hours, incompetent leaders and lack of direction. More worried about leader self image than the end result of obtaining a contract. Expenses are slow being reimbursed or questioned endlessly-even if they were "pre approved"

Pros

medical benefits are great... who has fully paid family medical..pension is great if you manage to vest.. paid time off is acceptable... to bad you can never actually take the time off you desperately need...

Cons

there is no work life balance, they expect you to drop your family and committments at a moments notice... oh that's right... your coworkers are your family... you don't need a partner, children or anyone else... they forgot where they came from or what job they are here to do.. they collect "dues" from members and forget about enforcing their contract, they are more worried about acquiring new members or politics.... they enforce rules on their own staff they would "flip" if an employer where they represent workers tried it.... you know, denying vacations, time with the family, mandating overtime, working 24/7.... they believe everyone needs/deserves a fair representation except.. their own staff.... they demand a dictatorship in their own organization... they don't need a "third party" making decisions... after all they can do so themselves.
