Pros

Overall, there are alot of reasons to work at SEIU and few drawbacks. It offers a great work life balance and much better pay than at other places. I found my colleagues to be smart and engaging and also really friendly. Management was a mixed bag though. Work was usually fairly Interesting and pretty good variety for the first few years. I thought that employees were usually treated fairly. You can travel if you want, but don't have to as well. I gained a much better understanding of the political process while I was there. Overall a good experience.

Cons

Hard to be promoted and move to a new job internally Management needs to work on communications Promotions hard to come by Employee morale could be higher

Pros

It was interesting to campaign for this particular cause.

Cons

I worked for the world's largest health care union for three months and never received my health insurance card. On top of that, they asked me to work a 96-hour workweek.

Pros

The workers that we represent are very hard workers deserving of good contracts and representation. Local 99 represents classified workers mostly in the LAUSD school district as well as some community colleges and education centers. The workers are amazing. They are what has kept many an organizer going when the times have gotten tough. The organizers and field reps truly care about the workers.

Cons

They expect external organizers to be available by phone 24/7. Long and unusual hours. Management forgets that we are workers just like the workers we represent. Local 99 is the 2nd lowest paid SEIU local in Los Angeles. The Executive Director was hand-picked appointed by the President of the International and this, as in the history of many other hand-picked directors, isn't the best for the workers or the employees of the local. There is favortism and if you're not in the inside clique you don't stand a snowball's chance in hell to let your skills shine.
