Pros

Used to be a good stable place to work. Good people to work with and growth potential. I worked for Safeway a long time it is sad to watch it get dismantled.

Cons

After the merger no one is safe. Most of the experienced and knowledgeable employees are gone. If they are not leaving for a new job its layoffs.

Pros

The company culture promoted self development and work life balance. Diverse leadership (pre-merger)

Cons

Safeway was bought by a group of investors and made private. It was merged with Albertsons, which the investment group owned as well, and the merger was handled poorly. It felt like the investors were trying to make a quick buck and now the rumor is that the company is slated for an IPO. Post-merger the diversity of company leadership became.. limited

Pros

Good coworkers, everyone is just trying to get by. I like the job itself. I got to sample the things we sell. If we are slow, the day goes by fine.

Cons

I was hired in at 9cents above minimum wage. The state raised it, and the store bumped me up to directly at minimum wage. If I had to stay maybe 20 minutes after my scheduled shift end time, I would be shorted that 20 minutes. I wanted to get out of the deli, so I crosstrained in Starbucks, being promised to stay permenantly there, which never happened. I was then told by the meat department that there was the possibility that I would be moving over there- never happened. Management is incompetent where it really counts, like ordering and scheduling. Assistant store manager was a creep who looked down on everyone in the store. I was told I was the lowest paid employee there, even though I was not the newest anymore. I am scheduled against my availibilty sometimes and am expected to be fine with it. Take Thanksgiving for example: it was on one of the days I said I needed off literally before I started the job. I look at the schedule when it was posted for the week, and I am scheduled to close. I get it was a holiday and I don't have enough seniority, but that was not my problem. I was scheduled directly against my availibility simply because my manager thought I wouldn't have school for the day. I work hard every night trying to close the deli while dealing with entitled and impatient customers, while still being taken for granted by management. The merger came with a new dresscode; store manager told me I had to buy shoes all black or all white. I am $12,500 in debt and I am expected to buy new shoes, even though my shoes I already wear only have a little color. They are still mostly black. That debt is the only reason I'm still here. Regularly understaffed for the days workload. Etc, etc, etc.
