Adult Health Center How Lane

Pros

Saint Peter's Healthcare System's, Adult Health Center How Lane is a very good company to work for. It is a fast paced working environment where our nursing and clinical assistant PCT staff get along very well together. We are a family. One of the reasons why I enjoy working here is because the management team listens and respects my opinion. This makes me feel valued as an employee. Many of the staff members have been working here for 5, 10, 20 and even 30 years, supporting each other. We cover for each other at the drop of a hat. When one of us is out sick or on vacation, patients ask for us by name. We became nurses because we love to care for our patients. A few of us have worked in this practice until retirement. This shows that How Lane Adult Center is a wonderful place to work.

Cons

We have no control over staff calling out sick.

Pros

You work alongside some good people (nurses, techs). Depending on who your manager is, you might work in a unit where your manager makes you feel supported. Patients have repeatedly said the care they receive at Saint Peter's is excellent, often comparing it favorably to other hospitals. Parking is free if you have your badge. Opportunities to advance are probably plentiful, because nobody wants to stay. Differential for certification is higher than other places.

Cons

Physician/Resident caliber is pretty low; bottom-of-the-barrel in most specialties except maybe NICU/Maternity-related. Knowledgeable nurses are appalled by how non-proactive so many of the attendings are in addressing time-sensitive issues. Despite it being against policy, many attendings won't bother putting orders in and will spend twenty minutes fighting with the nurse to have the put the orders in rather than just doing what they're supposed to do, and there does not seem to be consequences to them. In light of the Radonda verdict, this is especially appalling. With a few notable exceptions, the majority of the residents do not have a sense of responsibility, follow-up, or even accountability for basic information they should know. As a new nurse if I have to consistently remind you that an order is inappropriate for your patient, you should be ashamed. Administrators are not supportive of nursing staff; nursing educators, higher-level nursing administrators just want their metrics to improve by squeezing more out of the nurses doing all the work instead of doing more to support them, The charting system is nominally better than messenger pigeon. In order to properly care for your patient with the limited resourcing available and to document everything properly, you regularly stay very late. With more agency nurses, we are able to compare notes on what things are like at different hospitals. It's apparently not like this everywhere; our system is truly the worst.

Great staff--terrible leadership

Business Outlook

Pros

Staff is great. Supportive. Great teamwork

Cons

Leadership makes decisions based upon making the hospital attractive to a potential buyer. This means that positions are eliminated, staffing is reduced, salaries are cut. This makes for a very hostile work environment and devastates employee morale and staff satisfaction
