Pros

Made some good friends, got some good training, pay a PE bonus of $4k after you obtain license. Normal yearly raises (3-5%). Year end bonus of one pay check. Overtime accrual goes towards vacation time. Good family/work life balance.

Cons

This place somehow manages to be in one of the greatest cities in the world and still has the ability to suck the soul out of your. This place has zero culture. Very difficult to make friends because the way cubicles are laid out. Many bosses micromanage. Zero opportunity for growth unless you are a tall, white, male AND get lucky.

Although we can appreciate a Harry Potter reference, we very strongly disagree with your comments. 2017 marks our third consecutive year being named to the Chicago Tribune’s list of Top Workplaces, a recognition based entirely on employee feedback, and a direct reflection of our outstanding culture. Our Chicago office has a tremendous number of company sponsored activities – from bowling and softball to board games and photography –, that help to foster relationships between coworkers. Further, our collaborative work environment is designed for employees and teams to easily interact with one another. Finally, your comment about growth opportunity is simply not true.

Awesome place for bros

Pros

Consistency: unfriendliness, miles-long aisles of cubicles” walls, hierarchy to the extent “leadership” stays in their offices— they NEVER come out and say hi, ask what you’re working on, etc.. If you like quiet, you’re in luck. You can hear a pin drop. It’s literally the sound of misery, punctuated only by the sound of the obnoxiously loud, white male intern who thinks he’s the next coming of Christ.

Cons

Don’t come here if you’re a woman. This place is stuffed with dudes with 12 years of experience who have “principal” in their title. They obviously can never go anywhere else, so the entitlement and bro culture feeds on itself. Most of these sad dudes have been there most of their career and never got the memo that it’s 2023. It’s horrible. Like, beyond what you could possibly imagine.

Thank you for being a member of our team and contributing to Sargent & Lundy’s success. We value all former and current employees’ opinions, and yours are no exception. However, we’re disappointed that this is not an accurate reflection of S&L’s culture or work environment. We want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and reaffirm our strong commitment to being an affirmative action and equal employment opportunity employer. While the A/E/C industry as a whole continues to improve its minority representation, Sargent & Lundy has continuously and proactively sought ways to expand its outreach in female and minority placement and internal mobility. It’s also important to note that we’re an active participant in internal AND external reviews of pay equity, internal equity, and DE&I gaps. At a minimum, each year we engage external expertise to review and assess our hiring, promotion, termination, and pay equity, including race and gender, with statistical analyses. We value this review and analyses to help us adjust accordingly. We also offer a number of benefits and programs that support and encourage the women in our workforce, including Sargent & Lundy’s Women’s Professional Network. We encourage all employees to take an active role in their career and participate in the programs and benefits we offer for an enriched experience. While our offices do tend to be quiet on Mondays and Fridays, this is the result of the majority of our office staff following a flexible schedule where they are present in the office Tuesday-Thursday but can work remotely Monday and Friday. Our workspace is configured to optimize knowledge sharing collaboration with project teams and peers. Leadership staff sit in the center of our office floors for accessibility and visibility to staff, with an open-door policy. Our leadership takes an active role engaging with staff by being involved in project work/assignments, participating in communities of practice and employee resource groups, and conducting semi-annual business group town hall meetings. They also organize voluntary opportunities for staff to connect with one another, business group leadership, and company leadership. We encourage you to leverage that open-door policy and be proactive in initiating conversation with business leaders around you.

Lots of Room for Improvement

Pros

- Large recognized company with decent benefits and good pay - Looks good on resume - Plenty of good clubs/activities - Free training and lunches often

Cons

- Outdated mentality. System designed to favor time spent at the desk over quality of work - Extreme favoritism. One colleague may be swamped with work and plant visits while the other must look for work. - Low efficiency of workers due to poor communication and management. New workers are left to fend for themselves to find work and manage loads of unrelated training materials. Expectations need to be made more clear. - Hire too many and lay off as work goes down. - Company uses spy tactics to report performance - Project time expense reporting is flawed. Allow workers to charge to Sargent and Lundy instead of the client when work gets low. - Company is not flexible when it comes to vacations/PTO. - Nature of the work is mind-numbing - Central office location can cause long commute times - Unhelpful human resources department
