Pros

Some of the "grunt" employees are nice to work with. The hotel staff that you interact with are friendly.

Cons

Management is egotistical and does not communicate effectively. They do not know how to properly staff or schedule meaning people are being called at the last minute to work 10+ hour shifts. They want to cut costs so they reduce pay, skimp on equipment, yet management enjoys the perks of success. They will hang you out to dry if you disagree or mistakes are made (usually by the sales person). No benefits.

Pros

The workers at SBMG are some of the nicest you will ever meet. They work hard, they are dedicated, and working with your co workers can be fun. The environments are really neat. The hotels SBMG has are some of the nicest. The freedom, usually you can do whatever you want in your free time as long as everything get’s done.

Cons

The biggest problem in SBMG lies with the top two head honchos for the company. The name you wear on the shirts they give you, the name on your checks you have the pick up (no direct deposit,) and the name you tell people you work for is a man that does not exist. He does not care about you, he does not want you to succeed, he wants you to make money for him. He comes around a few times a year and will tell you everything is ok and that the company is making progress but it’s all lies. The second in charge is the worst boss you’ll ever have. Like the owner, he doesn’t care about your well being, or your happiness with the company, he cares about you making him rich. He will talk down to you and micro manage you to the point of you feeling trapped. The two of them prance around in their big expensive cars, wearing expensive clothes and jewelry, while their employees work long hours for very little pay. The things they will tell you are not true and the ways they manage their company makes this company one of the worst in Charlotte to work for. When you start working at SBMG everything is great. There is a promise of a future with the company. I can assure you, there is no future for you at SBMG. The pay you get in the beginning, is probably the pay you’ll have the entire time you’ll work there. The pay is HORRIBLE. People for this company work hard enough to deserve twice the pay, the pay other, better companies would be more than happy to offer. The culture. There is no attitude around culture for the company. The company office is a dark, dreary place where no employee is happy to go. When you go to the company hotels to work with your co workers, the conversations that you will have will be negative towards the company. Not a single employee for SBMG is satisfied with their working conditions. Every employee speaks low of the company when the bosses aren't around, and even if they say they aren’t, all of them are seeking employment elsewhere. The company does nothing for it’s people. It holds a mediocre Christmas party and meeting once a year but does nothing else. The Attire. If you have worked for other A/V companies you know the standard for attire. Black pants, black polo shirt, black shoes. Most companies with strict attire policies will provide the attire or offer a stipend for you to get the attire they require. SBMG requires you wear expensive dress clothing (usually a shirt and tie,) yes even during setup days, and will hold you accountable even though they don’t provide any of it. They give you a polo shirt that you’re not allowed to wear except on very rare occasions and that’s it. The Gear. The gear at SBMG is old and outdated. Most people don’t understand most of it, and they have the worlds worst inventory system. Forget any kind of organization or neatness. Every hotel is a mess with expensive gear and no one is there to help manage it. Again, the upper management does not care about this expensive issue, they would rather spend money on themselves then do anything for their employees.

Thank you for the kind words regarding our staff. It is great that you recognize that we have some of the most exceptional employees in the industry and we work hard to find them and keep them happy. We achieve that through a great working environment, strong leadership, and creating opportunities for advancement. We love our staff and believe that we have a positive employee culture and excellent benefits. That is important to us. I want to take a moment to address your feedback. Regarding Direct Deposit: As with all companies, it can be challenging to find the right option. Because SBMG is experiencing high growth, we have to prepare for that growth and find the right service that will adapt to the multiple states we serve. We are working hard to find a solution that works, and we see that option being available soon. Regarding Pay: Compensation is directly related to ability, experience, and contribution. We pay our employees fairly and have many programs in place for advancement. We provide on-the-job training that we hope everyone uses to his or her advantage. Employees, just starting their career, might make less in the beginning, but will see their pay increase as their competency improves. We want to make sure there is always a path to growth for our employees. Regarding Dress: Scott Brown Media Group is not like other companies. We are talented professionals who work in a sophisticated corporate environment. We work with some of the biggest companies in the world. Our standards do exceed other companies; this is not by accident. We want you to look professional so that clients will treat and respect you as professionals. We want all employees to be comfortable in the office and always encourage employees to discuss anything with HR.

Greedy and unfair management

Pros

If you like getting overtime hours, you will get plenty. For AV tech positions, they will hire you even if you don't have much experience. The technicians have really good personalities and are great to work with. That's about it.

Cons

VERY low pay. I'm not sure how workers who aren't management are living on their own. If you have experience and are just starting out, you will get paid the same as someone who has little to no experience. No direct deposit and checks are never on time, which frankly I don't know how they keep getting away it. You're also paid for work you did two weeks prior, so you won't see your first check until working there for a month. They will also make you promises to get you hired like getting a raise, but it won't happen. The only raise you have a chance of getting is at the end of the year, maybe. Schedules are also put out way too late. They claim that this is the case because events pop up with little notice. This is rarely the case. I've seen the BEO's for most of their hotels and been to BEO meetings, and these events are planned weeks to months in advance. It's due to laziness or being run ragged because the guy who does scheduling also runs the biggest property; it's too much work for one person. Tim Kolesar is by far the worst co-worker I've ever dealt with. He cares more about employees he knows personally than employees that actually have AV experience and know what they're doing. He will get mad if you aren't dressed in a shirt and tie when trying to load in and set up a show. You really can't set up big AV events with that kind of dress code. He cares more about appearance than actually getting the job done. If the employees at a property meet the bonus quota, he will then raise the quota. I'm not sure how his greed and negligence towards clients has kept the company going. There's a lot of clients that don't know much about AV, but you can't expect to rip them off they do know AV. Properties have been lost like that before, and they will be lost again because I don't think he's going to change his sales tactics anytime soon. Nick Daniels would be a far better replacement because he can sell and knows AV. There's also no gear inventory. When gear is needed at a property, the warehouse guys will call around searching for whatever they need. It has screwed properties over and clients have noticed when they don't have gear they bought. It's embarrassing and stressful for the technicians who have to either travel on their own dime to get the gear they need or wing it.

Thank you for recognizing our great technicians and their excellent personalities. Our team is the fundamental foundation of Scott Brown Media Group, and we think they make us a fantastic company. Thank you for your comments, I would like to address some of your concerns. Regarding Pay: We start all employees at a pay directly related to their experience, ability and skill set. We pay all employees above minimum wage. At Scott Brown Media Company we believe we have created an environment to cultivate growth and encourage employees to strive to achieve their own career goals. Regarding Direct Deposit: We are working on a direct deposit option for the company but has yet to land on the right solution. Regarding Pay Frequency: In a corporate environment, it is standard practice to pay Semi-Monthly. We subscribe to this pay frequency as most of our employees like that their pay matches their monthly billing cycles like rent, auto, and credit card bills. Regarding Sales Quotas: In the hospitality industry, every hotel sets sales goals which directly impact their pay. Those goals are also raised year over year as the expectation is always to improve. We work with that same growth model. It is not greedy; it is merely part of the business. You may not be aware that Scott Brown Media Group is one of the few companies who give bonuses to all of the employees in the company. So, not only are salespeople bonused, but salary and hourly technicians are bonused as well. We think that is pretty special. Regarding Dress: We are a professional company, and thus we dress as professionals. This might be different from other companies, and that's OK. Our dress showcases and helps deliver the message that we are great at what we do. We outline this in our employee handbook. Regarding Inventory: We agree that our equipment is essential and it can be frustrating when the gear is not put back where it should. We perform almost 100 events per day. That is a lot of equipment to move around and can be challenging. We are always striving to come up with better tracking solutions. We recently rolled out our new inventory tracking system and, since implementation, we have seen an improvement in inventory management. Regarding training: Twice, every month, we have audio and video training for all employees to take advantage of and grow their knowledge and skill. Regarding my move to NY: It can be challenging to open a new office and I committed myself to SBMG by moving to New York to build the entire North East region. Since my move, we now service 4 major properties in New York and New Jersey. Our Charlotte market has a great staff who are wonderfully serving our home base. Building new offices might be why SBMG has received the Inc 5000 award for the fastest growing companies in America for 4 years.
