Pros

Great industry. Lots of great people across all departments.

Cons

There are unfortunately some very toxic leaders (mine was one of them) who blatantly abuse their position of power and unfortunately and shockingly HR turns a blind eye to such behavior, even when you have clear written documentation of such abuse of power. Scribd tries hard to sell itself as a forward thinking and progressive company but I soon realized when it mattered that this was just talk with no substance behind it. If you are an ambitious person with self respect and not a yes man to authoritarian rule, I suggest that you look elsewhere to find a company that really cares about their people and culture.

Underpaid and overworked

Pros

Some people here are honestly smart and willing to speak up when management introduces dumb policies Good benefits too, I guess, but the compensation for anyone below senior is garbage

Cons

Overall management is horrible. My manager put his name on documentation that our team wrote to make it look like he was doing work. According to him, he needed to increase his influence at the company We spent hours of the team’s time crowdsourcing tech docs and other things for tickets that our manager assigned to himself, holding up projects for WEEKS. Obviously he blamed the team for the slow progress too I was constantly told that my manager was looking into issues that I brought up, only to have nothing come out of it months later. When I escalated, my manager gave me an earful and told me things should have stayed between us Everything from your career progression is self serve, because your manager will be too busy brown nosing to be paying attention to work you’ve been doing. 1 on 1 time with my manager was basically me asking questions for 5-10 minutes and my manager rambling and complaining for 45. Pretty funny because he also attacked other teams without prompting Sadly everything I’ve listed is the norm here, and if you’re one of the lucky few that have a good manager, then your stay might be tolerable

Best place I've worked

Pros

Personally, I don’t understand all these negative reviews. I’ve been working at Scribd for over a year now and think it’s one of the best places I’ve ever worked. It’s true the company has been through a lot of change, but there’s a ton of great work happening. What I’ve witnessed is that we’re hiring really smart people to join the already impressive group of employees and it’s pushing our product to a new level. Not to mention, the culture at Scribd is really cool and fun. Sure, you have to work hard, and the expectations are high. But, the company is pretty clear about what those expectations are. And there are a ton of perks and benefits to balance it out. I’d say they treat employees better than most companies. So, to anyone reading about Scribd, I’d suggest you take all these former employees’ reviews with the grain of salt they deserve. There are plenty of us that are sticking around because we believe in the company, and it’s for good reason.

Cons

I'm required to type something here so I'll say I'd love more surprise days off.
