Pros

Huge potential for intellectual growth regarding medical knowledge and terminology. Relatively flexible scheduling with great pay for full-time or even part-time postitions.

Cons

There's an extensive training period and the learning curve is steep. Shifts average anywhere from 8-12 hours and can sometimes prove to be mentally taxing.

Pros

For anyone interested in entering the medical profession, working as a scribe offers unparalleled experience with terminology, procedures, medical decision making, and patient interaction. It's a good and flexible transitional job for college students/recent graduates prior to attending health professional school.

Cons

The supply for scribes is large enough that the company is able to "exploit" their employees by offering minimum wage pay, poor hours, and no benefits. There's very little room for upward mobility within the company. Because of these factors, most employees stay for a short duration.

Scribes at ScribeAmerica currently receive an increased wage once they pass through our training protocol and have developed the skills necessary to work one-on-one with a provider. ScribeAmerica provides a cost of living wage increase annually for employees who have worked at the company for a pre-determined length of time, and additional raises are based on performance and promotions to positions with greater responsibility. ScribeAmerica provides opportunities for breaks and meal periods, and pays overtime wages in accordance with applicable federal or state law. While ScribeAmerica does not disclose the wages of its employees or management, our Project Leader career path is compensated at based on the fact that the position requires constant nationwide travel. Working as a scribe can be very challenging, but enormously rewarding for the right person. However, we are glad you had a memorable and excellent experience which will aid in your future career.

Pros

Unparalleled experience with medical documentation and terminology, you are able to see everything that the doctor does in the department without the pressure of a clinical (as opposed to clerical) position. You get connections with physicians and staff.

Cons

Little flexibility for coverage when someone calls off, pay could be better (but I don't mind because I am in college, and it is more than minimum wage), hours are not for everyone although they work well for my schedule.
