Pros

Invaluable first hand experience working along side physicians. If you are interested in medical school you can't beat it.

Cons

Pay is minimum wage for your area. You're held to the doctor's hours which can mean working 10 hours straight.

Pros

It is good experience, helped me to be more confident around doctors and understand the healthcare system.

Cons

A horribly managed company. I worked in upper management, managing a team of 30 scribes and starting new projects. Managers above me would make decisions that would effect my team, like pay cuts, and not involve me, leaving me to deal with angry employees and having no idea why they were angry. Handed down a pay cut to me too that will go into effect on Christmas day. A horribly tone deaf company that makes bad decisions. Will give you as much work as possible to see how far they can push you. Cuts pay of lowest level employees, but I'm sure all the executives at the headquarters in Florida still have very nice golf memberships. They are even getting rid of in-person interviews in favor of interviews via Skype. Terrible decisions all around that will drive out a lot of employees, leaving a power vacuum and a bunch of people that have no idea what they are doing. Look elsewhere for gap year opportunities

Pros

I learnt a lot scribing in the Neurocriticalcare and Critical Care ICU at Emory University teaching hospital on Clifton Road. So it’s a great learning experience and source of recommendation letter and research opportunity for anyone interested in Medical School, residency, PA school, neurology, neurosurgery, critical care etc. My immediate manager was very sweet and easy to work with and offered help anytime one needed it. Employees were matched as best as possible to a location close to their homes.

Cons

The pay is Abysmal. $10/Hr and you pay for parking which is $8 if your ticket is validated before 6pm or $12 if you do not validate your ticket. Medical Health insurance will cost you almost $70 biweekly I.e ~$140 per month. Each scribe had ~4-5 shifts per month at the Emory University Teaching hospital on Clifton Rd, GA location. Management said interested scribes could cross train in other specialties and work at other scribe America locations in the area to makeup for the low number of Shifts at my location. Unfortunately, this never happened for me. The personnel who was to take care of this did not return calls nor emails. I contacted management in Florida and they were equally lackluster in their effort to get me cross training opportunities. So go figure trying to pay your bills and have any change left. Also some of the staff we had to work with at Emory University teaching hospital were not inclusive at all! But, I brushed it over and went on with my work! Side note: If you are a Foreign Medical Graduate especially from a Caribbean medical school, Emory University on Clifton rd makes it extremely difficult, if not impossible to get job opportunities or research opportunities. So I made sure not to mention my Caribbean foreign medical graduate background to avoid being a target in any way!
