It's a Trap!

Pros

- On the Job Training (Quality of training has likely decreased since senior employees do not stay long enough to pass along their knowledge) - Casual Work Environment

Cons

First and foremost, the biggest con of working at ScriptiLabs was the underlying hostile environment created by the owners and their family. Harassment and bullying from "leadership" is a very real problem. The number of times that I was inappropriately engaged with in manners that made me feel very uncomfortable is staggering. To make matters worse, the "HR Department" was a family member, who wasn't on payroll during the entirety of my employment. They say that they encourage you to voice your opinions and ideas, but this is a terrible idea! If you say anything that is in any fashion contradictory to their own views, then you are immediately treated differently. It is not uncommon for those that voice a different opinion to be quickly terminated for obscure reasons, or to be pushed out of the company voluntarily due to how they are shunned out by leadership. There is also a running theme of hiring young beautiful women that is very creepy. I do not recommend that anyone goes to work for ScriptiLabs, but I must raise a huge red flag out to females. Just stay away! - Job Security (Constantly dissatisfying clients and struggling with profits) - Empty Promises (They hook you in with enticing offers and promises that very rarely come true) - Low Retention Rates (Of employees and clients) - Tarnishing Your Professional Name (I am very ashamed that my name is associated with their terrible business practice and poor customer service. - Those leading the company do not understand the industry (This hinders both the ability to hire qualified talent, and the ability to make appropriate decisions throughout their business's practice) - Overall, next to no standard benefits (The vacation/Sick time benefits are a joke) FALSE RECOGNITION - Fake reviews every where, and very skewed awards. - Throughout Yelp, Bigcommerce.com, Facebook, and likely other places throughout the web are reviews created by family and friends. Don't let them fool you about enableids.com or enableits.com. The CEO of ScriptiLabs owns both companies, and the reviews were written by staff members. - Awards such as Best Places to Work in Austin are all nominated by a family member who is very close to company. Other accreditation such as being a Google Partner and Member of the Chamber of Commerce are all paid for by Scriptilabs.

Training There are plenty of opportunities to train in many different aspects of our business. Our training program is beyond adhoc but not quite as mature as we would like. This industry changes very quickly so keeping up can be quite challenging. Over half of our staff has been here for at least 18 months and are more than willing to help those that are willing to learn. Ask any of our developers about their opportunities to learn and I think that you will find that they have opportunities to learn each and every day. Every single department has a training manual that can be referred to learn from and reference when needed. The Environment as a Whole One of the most important aspects of this company is employee feedback. It’s how we have become the company we are today. In the early days we had adhoc meetings everywhere and if we didn’t have our employee feedback, we would have failed. We listen carefully and will make whatever changes are necessary in order to improve. We won’t make all changes as not all ideas are in synch with the big picture. However, no employee will ever be alienated in any way for making recommendations. When we look to hire new employees, we never focus on gender, sexual orientation, race, etc. We simply hire the most qualified candidate to fill the position that we can afford at the time. If your interpretation of our female employees is that they are beautiful, we’re sure they would find that flattering. However, our guess is that they would prefer to be known more for their amazing work ethic and accomplishments over being labeled “pretty”. The job security associated with ScriptiLabs is no different than any other company. In fact, we are very close to being in line with other companies in this market. I would encourage anybody that is interested in ScriptiLabs to seek out any of our employees on LinkedIn and get their honest opinion about the company and its job security. We admit that our quest for healthcare has taken longer than we had hoped. We made a decision to focus on raising salaries before healthcare so that our employees could at least have the option to buy their own in the interim. Just know that our intent was always to implement them as soon as we could afford them. That time has now come. Access to quality healthcare is starting on Jan. 1st, 2015 and it looks like we are going to be able to pay 50% of our employees’ premiums. We simply had to be patient and responsible so we didn’t overextend. I hope to pay 100% of the premiums by 2016 but we can only False Recognition We have never attempted to falsify any online recognition. You simply cannot fake being a Google Partner, Member of the Chamber of Commerce or The Austin Business Journal’s Best Places to Work. The ABJ‘s “Best Places to Work” was voted on by all of our employees at the time. Last year we didn’t qualify but we are doing everything we can this year to improve benefits since that is where we scored the lowest. Now that we are implementing healthcare, we are confident that our employees will give us a higher rating than they did this year. It is a very useful tool for us and one that we listen to carefully. In regards to BigCommerce.com, you have to have a site in order to post feedback. We can’t fake anything related to these websites. These are clients of ours that we have done work for and not all of them are perfect. We make mistakes just like any company. All we can do is listen to our customer feedback and improve on a daily basis.

Pros

Free cereal. Free bagels. Free soda. Free beer. A corporate reputation department that posts positive glassdooor reviews and challenges negative ones.

Cons

The CEO is terrible. Just read all the stories about him in Ad Week, Ad Age and the Wall Street Journal.

Pros

This really is my Pros and Cons together as the Pros to working at this company outweighs the Cons: * Very Organized – In the early days, everybody had to wear a lot of hats. That is just how a startup works. Some of that meant that employees had to do jobs that weren’t even closely related. What I have noticed is that as the company grows it is allowing for specialization to slowly take hold. ScriptiLabs is a highly organized company with plenty of opportunity for upward mobility as the company continues to grow and expand its services. The internal processes are polished and hold their employees accountable and still allow for plenty of time for administrative tasks. * Improved Hiring Practices and Corporate Hierarchy - I was very concerned with the hiring practices at first. It was so bad that I almost left the company. Especially when they started hiring friends of friends. Management asked me to stay and to give it time…and I did. The biggest problem that I had with the hiring practices was in regards to how young ScriptiLabs was hiring. At one point (2013 to Q1 2014) I would estimate that close to 50% of the company was below the age of 25. There isn’t anything necessarily wrong with hiring young, but you have to balance it out with leadership or chaos is bound to ensue...and it did. Couple that with a lack of accountability in the early days and you have a recipe for disaster when you do finally have to hold people accountable. Within the past six months, that has all changed and I couldn’t be happier about it. There are now knowledgeable supervisors in place in every department and ownership is slowly starting to pull away leaving the experts to get the job done. One thing that I’ve noticed is that they are hiring very high level developers that have been in the industry for a long time and truly know how software development is supposed to work. This is very encouraging! * Increased Salaries – When this company first started, the salaries were very close to poverty level. I’m not even kidding. However, that is what a startup is all about, right? It was actually a fun time to be a part of the team despite the low pay. I believed in management and it has paid off nicely for me and I know that is the case for others as well. What I know is that salaries have increased in general as their business has grown. My salary is almost double what it was when I first started. * Benefits – Because this company was bootstrapped, benefits are still lagging. I’m definitely starting to see some signs of improvement here. They have just established a Fun & Benefits committee that meets monthly and comes up with ideas on how to have fun while also addressing the priority for benefits. * Considerate but Demanding Management – Don’t try to work at ScriptiLabs if you are looking for a “chill” job. There is no place to hide. They will hold you accountable but will make certain you are growing and learning at the same time. I’ve never had any issue with management treating me with a lack of respect or any different because I am a female. They are fair, courteous and care about their employees both inside and outside of the business. * Work/Life Balance – ScriptiLabs is very conscious of making sure you don’t burnout. The PTO is around 8 full days the first year…which isn’t all that great. However, it goes to 12 full days in year two and 15 days in year three. The normal ScriptiLabs workdays are only 7.5 hours long. The CEO is a Stage IV cancer survivor so life outside of work is important to him. Having said that, there are still crunch times where we might get a little more work than we can handle during the normal work hours and everybody might work a little bit over to get over the hump. This is rare and only happens every few months. Most employees don’t mind at all as they are rarely asked to work additional time. * Overall Momentum – ScriptiLabs has gone from one employee when it was acquired to almost twenty employees. Management might not understand development all that well but there aren’t many companies that have grown at this rate on a bootstrapped budget. They are now starting to get into CRM integration which will open up an entirely new market segment to them. The infrastructure is in place to scale and the marketing of this company is just now starting to hit its stride.

Cons

All of my Pros and Cons are listed together.

Rotting from the Inside Out

Pros

The job itself was actually a lot of fun. Being able to work with a passionate clientele like small business owners is exhilarating. I would recommend the SEO/advertising field (though not this particular company) to anyone who enjoys creatively solving problems, writing and helping people achieve their dreams. Over all, the work environment is casual, and food and drink are often provided to employees.

Cons

Unfortunately, it's the people that make ScriptiLabs a terrible place to work, specifically the upper management. The CEO himself is nice enough (if you're a woman, as long as you don't mind receiving a few sexually charged comments on days you decide to put extra care into your hair and makeup) but he's bullied around by certain family members, some of whom are as stubborn as they are poorly educated, and wildly jealous of anyone who catches his wondering eye. Be warned: ScriptiLabs takes 'family owned and operated' to a whole new level. Cliques and favoritism abound. Prepare to get 'laid off' for obscure reasons if you so much as toe the line of certain family members' bad sides. To stay in their good graces, avoid: looking nice, being young, smiling, offering alternatives to poorly conceived strategies, laughing in the workplace (certain insecure individuals might think this is directed at them!), having any semblance of a life outside of ScriptiLabs that requires you to miss out on the 'optional' alcohol-based outings. The office atmosphere at ScriptiLabs is a little bit like a college dorm sometimes, which does have its pluses, but don't delude yourself into thinking work ends at 5. If you decline to join one of the office-wide parties or to have a beer on celebratory Fridays, management will take your absence as a personal insult and attempt to single you out from then on. "What's your problem?" "You think you're too good for us?" Yeah, it really is that crazy. Good luck to my fellow introverts. Management is running blind into a field they know nothing about. If you're looking for hands-on training, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. The project manager is usually a family member not even on the payroll, with no functional knowledge of processes or timeframes--but still, their word is law, and if you try to reason with them, you'll be put on the blacklist.

Cons What we know about the current CEO is that he is not only a “nice enough guy” but he is also caring, understanding and generous. You are correct about the CEO telling both males and females that they look nice or sharp if they care enough to take extra care to look professional. That is a good way to encourage dressing professionally and is not something unique to ScriptiLabs. In fact, supervisors and management are encouraged to do this. We did do some research internally, in confidence, and we could not find one other employee that shares your opinion in regards to anything that the CEO or anybody else in the company says being “sexually charged”. If you felt that way, ScriptiLabs would like to sincerely apologize. This was certainly not the intent. If you know anything about this CEO, the one thing about him is that he is not, and will not, allow himself to be bullied in any way. His job is to make sure that the company is successful. He is very tolerant up to a point but knows when something has to be done his way and will make sure that it gets done the right way. Cliques and Favoritism To your point, we have certainly had a lot of this in the past. Employees that have recently been hired that might have looked at some of the older GlassDoor reviews before interviewing are absolutely confused about this concern once they have been here for awhile. ScriptiLabs treats everybody fairly. When employees go above and beyond, they are rewarded. The CEO is very mindful of this because of our past experiences and will do what he can for this not to happen again. Laid off for Obscure Reasons There has not been one employee that has been let go without very careful thought going into it. We understand that it has a very serious impact on their lives and weigh it heavily. We work very hard to try to correct or coach an employee through any problems they may be having with a particular task or expectation. Sometimes, employees are simply not qualified for a particular position. There are other reasons that we might have to let somebody go. Sometimes, it’s as simple as having an extraordinarily slow month or behavior unbecoming of a ScriptiLabs employee. ScriptiLabs is not unique in this regard and this happens it business all of the time. Because we are a mostly organic and smaller company, that may feel more pronounced at times. Office atmosphere What has been stated in regards to the office atmosphere is completely inaccurate. We have fun around here but it is a very professional environment to work in. There is often times laughter, pranks and good conversations that are happening all of the time. This is improving as we have been able to upgrade personnel. There are certainly times where employees have to work past 5:00. For the most part, this is rare and might happen to a particular employee once every month or so. It’s very evident that this company cares about its employees work/life balance. What any prospects need to keep in mind is that you are only scheduled for 7.5 hours per day. This means that you get 2.5 hours per week back on average. What we find is that most people don’t mind working a few extra hours here and there because they realize that the company does care. Management is blind… The truth of the matter is that when ScriptiLabs was first acquired, management didn’t quite understand the demand for the services associated with this growing space. There were a lot of adjustments that were in order for sure. Most of those process adjustments and product/service development were completed within the first couple of years and now this company is taking off like a rocket. What management understands very well is business and how business works. The current employees have confidence in where we are headed as a company. We have grown at an annual rate that most companies only dream of. 2014 looks to be a record breaking year and the month of December is capping it off with a record breaking month. The prospects for 2015 are off the charts and management seems to be making all of the right moves. Not as Smart as you Think you Are Management at ScriptiLabs is pretty humble overall. We certainly don’t think we know it all but we do learn very quickly and make adjustments to improve where we can. All we can do is the very best that we can do every single day that we walk in the door. I don’t think we can ask more than that of ourselves.
