Pros

Securian as a conservative mutual company is less impacted by the recession, therefore more secure. The culture is hard working, respectful and supportive. Training, working from home, flexible work time are all available.

Cons

Salary and benefits are less than other companies. There is no 401k match, a 2 week vs a 1 week period before disability kicks in, one jeans day per quarter, but I wouldn't trade the security and respect for all of this elsewhere. Parking downtown is expensive, however it can be deducted before taxes from the paycheck.

Pros

Great place to work. Very employee positive work environment. Most managers are truly people-oriented and genuinely interested in YOUR upward movement and improved performance. Great facilities in the downtown St. Paul location and access to the Skyway system is a real plus - particularly for those who may choose to live downtown.

Cons

The sheer size of the company means recognition is a stairstep process. For the average employee, there is little interaction with the upper levels of management. Like any large company, there is the potential for stifling creativity if midlevel managers aren't doing their jobs. This is a rarity at MN Mutual.

Pros

Work life balance, job security, advancement opportunities, friendly people to work with. Defined benefit and defined contribution plans along with a profit sharing plan and generous time off are amazing benefits. The people you work do go out of their way to make sure you are understanding things aren't doing something that is wholly compartmentalized.

Cons

Not on the cutting edge of technology for software, tied to legacy systems without hope of getting off them. Sometimes it seems like the company is a little cheap with small things but the profit sharing does making up for it in the final analysis. Sometimes it doesn't always seem that everything that could be communicated within reason is communicated.
