Pros

Local and some what flexible but not consistent throughout the organization. It is a nice place to work but it depends on department and management.

Cons

Too many "old timers" working in management that don't know what it's like to work elsewhere. They don't force people that have been there since day one to evolve with times. They put too much pressure on overachievers and nothing on average workers. Workload is 3x more than it should be because they aren't up on technology. HR has leaks in it. Promotions aren't given as they should. It's a typical "it's not what you know" company. Stress and tension is very high. Flexibility should be everywhere.

Declining Culture and Lack of Clear Remote Work Policy or Equitable Practices

Pros

Mid-level leaders are working hard to protect their teams and maintain morale, even when executive decisions make that difficult. Strong peer commiseration across teams to help each other cope.

Cons

The company has undergone significant changes that have negatively impacted morale and trust in leadership. The CEO appears disconnected from the day-to-day realities employees face, particularly regarding work-life balance and commuting expectations. With the relocation from Branchville to Short Hills, many long-tenured employees are being placed in a difficult position. Unlike senior executives, most employees cannot easily afford to move closer to the new office location. The shift to increased in-office requirements feels less like a collaboration-driven initiative and more like a strategy that disproportionately impacts established team members. Work-life balance has significantly eroded. At a time when many peer organizations are adopting thoughtful hybrid and remote strategies to attract and retain talent, this company is moving in the opposite direction. This approach will likely create substantial turnover and make it challenging to fill the many roles that will become vacant. Additionally, there are inequitable practices surrounding remote work. There is no clearly defined or consistently applied remote work policy, leading to confusion and perceptions of favoritism. Expectations vary by team and individual, which undermines fairness and transparency.

Horrible, Toxic Working Environment

Pros

One of the only major companies (outside of Thorlabs) to work for in Newton, New Jersey that pays okay and has benefits.

Cons

Never have I worked somewhere where you constantly have to look over your shoulder and walk on eggshells. The people who thrive here are brown-nosing sycophants, who look for any opportunity to throw someone under the bus to make themselves look better. I can't speak for all departments, but the flood insurance department was terrible to work in. Training is not very thorough and they throw you into the fire and then get upset when you don't excel immediately. Management does not trust anyone to do their job and it's obvious with the sheer amount of micromanaging they do. They even time your bathroom breaks and lunch breaks to make sure you aren't stealing company time. Additionally, I witnessed two coworkers of mine being bullied by the manager of the division, who is incredibly short-tempered and unprofessional--many conversations were had with HR and somehow this person is STILL in the flood department. This manager also became angry and took it personally when another individual gave notice due to the toxic work environment and the manager proceeded to tell this person "good luck working at Walmart then". Additionally, one of my friends who works remotely for Selective was reported by a coworker for having her baby in the background of a video meeting. That is truly despicable behavior, especially when my friend has excelled in her role for many years. Overall, unless you are literally about to be homeless, I would not recommend working here. There are many insurance companies that offer remote roles these days.
