Pros

-Made some really good friends and colleagues at the lower levels of the organization -I was part of a sweep of layoffs. Yep, that’s a pro. I’m finally free.

Cons

-There is one particular leader who has been mentioned in several other reviews. She was the driver of what I felt to be a long-range targeted campaign of harassment and bullying that led to one of the most toxic and stressful work environments I’ve ever been in. Straight up hostile in my opinion. I was always fearing for my job security because it felt like she had a personal vendetta against specific individuals and team(s?) in her dept. We could never figure out why. Many people I spoke with had never even met her face-to-face. My mental health was in the dumpster by the time I was dismissed with zero warning. -Sexism. Female employees were called “girls” regularly by male managers, which was one of the much lighter examples of what I felt was a consistently biased male-dominated workplace experience. In my opinion, it was an old boys club with young faces. - I personally witnessed other ‘isms that I can’t disclose here without revealing myself. This is the type of org I fear would retaliate against me for giving my honest feedback about my personal experience. -All of this was reported to HR by numerous individuals (from what I was told) across teams and functionalities. If HR did address it, I couldn’t tell. Neither could anyone else I spoke with in the department. This individual in leadership continues to work there and she was unprofessional up until the day I was terminated. It felt as if our own HR partner was routinely dodging us because they knew there was nothing that they could do from their position. -I’m afraid of applying to new positions. I’ve lost the confidence I had before Semrush. I’m changed … and not for the better.

Pros

Having a remote job in tech + the semrush product is a really great software suite for digital marketers. There are some great people at the company that you could build life long friendships/relationships with.

Cons

During my tenure at Semrush, I've witnessed a substantial decline in the company culture and leadership, particularly within the sales department. The initial atmosphere, characterized by support and collaboration, has morphed into an environment consumed with increased pressure, a rigid structure, and an overall TOXIC workplace. Significant changes in the sales department have set the stage for a cutthroat atmosphere devoid of loyalty. The current environment fosters a sense of uncertainty and insecurity among employees who constantly feel as if each day could be their last. I've observed troubling behavior within sales leadership, particularly concerning one individual who bears resemblance to a female German dictator from WW2. This person not only demands excessive availability, extending well past working hours, but also engages in inappropriate and discriminatory conduct. Instances of racist remarks during team syncs and 1-on-1 meetings are unacceptable and have created a hostile work environment. Additionally, this leader indulges in negative discussions, often demeaning others in public forums, fostering a culture of disrespect and mistrust. It's concerning that this leader may believe they have the team's support and trust, while in reality, their actions have revealed a pattern of vindictiveness and manipulation. This behavior is detrimental to team morale and undermines the trust essential for a healthy work environment. Adding to the distress, HR consistently aligns with management immediately, perpetuating the toxic discrimination instigated by leaders in the sales organization. Another critical area for improvement lies in the open communication and feedback mechanisms for leadership. Strengthening these aspects is crucial to fostering a more inclusive and supportive culture within the sales team. There is a glaring need for substantial improvement in the availability and responsiveness of the HR department, especially for individual contributors seeking guidance or support. A shift towards a culture of open communication and empathy within HR could significantly benefit employees in need of assistance. While my experience may not be universally applicable to every department or team within Semrush, I believe it's important for potential applicants to be aware of the recent changes. Due to the evident shifts I encountered, I would strongly advise them to explore opportunities in other SaaS organizations to secure a healthier balance between professional growth and mental well-being.

Pros

Hybrid work from home model for most, free snacks and lunches in office, fun environment at times, ping pong tables and more, diverse

Cons

This company has gone severely downhill in the past 6 months or so. I’m worried about its future honestly. First off, they require you to make sales plans for your top customers. Not a bad thing but it’s nothing more than a scavenger hunt through Salesforce and input into a Google Sheet. You don’t update the high power CRM, as you are supposed to update the Sheet that is on a shared drive. Tedious and greatly ineffective. You are paid based off your book of business whether you sell them anything or not. If you have a good book buying on their own, you will make some money. If you are reliant on selling through Zoom meetings, you must be aggressive or else you will fall short of targets. Most will upgrade on their own through the web so thankfully it counts towards your target. The sales cycles can take time so your meetings need to set up future business. If they aren’t buying on their own you won’t have a cushion and hitting target to make money will be difficult. They recently raised their prices on their oldest clients, assuring us we would be paid on the increase. Halfway through the month they took it out of commissions, dropping many people in commissions tiers paying them less. Since the stock isn’t doing well, it’s a great way to free up cash and lower expenses, make things not commissionable randomly. New customers are paid out so little they are often not given the attention needed because, while a new customer is great, they pay out significantly less that it isn’t worth the time. They raise sales goals after a month starts as well. Managers are often worthless unless you are an ambassador for them, then you will always have a job. If not, be prepared for some favoritism and unfair practices. Change happens and it’s an understatement. Many times something will change and people will be reluctant to change knowing it will be forgotten or not focused on the following week. When asked about negative reviews, the CEO said “everyone in the industry has these. They are from people that are unhappy. Happy people don’t leave reviews”, yet a year ago they are many glowing reviews. The sales side is extremely shady in their practices, coincidentally with falling stock prices. I bet the next earnings report will show record cost savings and increased paying customers on the backs of not paying their employees correctly.

Dear Colleague, You're absolutely right–these days, we receive a lot of negative reviews. This is understandable and is closely related to the numerous changes within the Sales team and the introduction of some new processes. However, it's important to note that constant change is a core aspect of our culture and a key value of our company. We openly discuss all the changes with all employees, but we also recognize that it may not suit everyone. In terms of plans and KPIs, we ensure clear and timely communication and provide all metric updates quarterly. With that being said, we appreciate your feedback and advice for the leadership. We understand the importance of providing opportunities for our employees to be heard, and please believe us—we are listening. Yours, Semrush Team
