Pros

Loved working with seniors. Gave me a lot of new perspective on life.

Cons

I want to preface this by giving some advice to current employees: act your wage. Also unionize. - Employees are considered 100% expendable, and management will use the excuse that they do not care about the company when they air legitimate grievances. I once witnessed upper management discuss letting a staff member go because they had commented about feeling as though the Christmas bonus was not large enough. - Do not pay fairly at all, and raises do not match the amount of work expected of employees. Employees are expected to go above and beyond and to be “team players” for less than a living wage, then management wonders why there is such a high turnover rate. I worked at an independent living location in an administrative position and I spent every shift for almost a month trying to prevent a new resident with sundowners from assaulting their spouse with lamps and other pieces of furniture and screaming for their neighbors to call the police because they thought that they had been kidnapped. I aired my concerns to management right from the start and it took them weeks to handle it, presumably because they had misled the family about the level of services offered. I was not trained or paid for that level of care. - Management encourages everybody to help one another regardless of department, even if that means your own work falling behind in order to pick up the slack for others or even the slack from being understaffed. This, of course, does not apply to the sales team. I was reprimanded multiple times for asking assistance from the sales team, even at times which involved emergency medical situations with residents. Management will roll out the red carpet and make every promise imaginable in order to convince people to sign a lease but will virtually forget about them once they actually move in. At one point, sales told a prospect that we offered dogwalking services (we didn’t) and when that person moved in, non-sales staff’s work fell behind because we were expected to walk the dog every few hours. They will do whatever they can to bring people in regardless of the level of assistance required by pushing this “5 Star” image without paying accordingly. - I was told in my orientation that my number one goal at work should be to get leases even though I was not in a sales position. This should have been a red flag to get out of there. - Management holds a culture of secrecy about literally everything. Zero transparency from them about decisions made behind closed doors. The property I worked for found bedbugs in one apartment, and rather than educating the community on the signs to look for in preventing them from spreading, they forbade staff from saying anything to anybody, including residents. Additionally, management likes to have terminated employees escorted off property no matter the reason, and we have been told to contact the police if they were to return with no explanation. In one instance, I found out that a staff member who was treated like a violent threat in this manner had been fired after putting in a four week notice because “they just didn’t care about the company.” - I witnessed multiple instances of retaliatory behavior toward the loved ones of employees, including dismissal of vendors and employees who have relationships with former employees. - Corporate seems to implement policies with little to no understanding of how each property operates day-to-day. I was employed for over three years and never once met anybody from the corporate team other than the safety compliance officers even though they kept telling me that they would be in to meet each staff member. - Management will force all staff to take surveys that make the company look good and reprimand staff members who do not do it. They placed on a Fortune list of Best Places to Work in Aging Services list a few years back based off of forced responses from employees and marketed just the “Best Place to Work” part without specifying the industry. Totally dishonest marketing. - Very little opportunity for growth within the company. My direct supervisor was totally inept at their job, and I was often cleaning up the messes they left behind. I made clear to management that this was happening, and that I was a better fit for the position. I gave plenty of examples of my supervisor dropping the ball and finally left because I could not stand doing their work for them. Less than one week after I left and started a better, higher paying job with a company whose values align better with my own, I got a call telling me that the supervisor had finally been fired asking me to come back. Too little too late. I am now with a new company that hired me into a similar, foot-in-the-door position that I was working with Senior Star and I received a promotion to upper management after only six months. There are so many better places to work out there.

Pros

Everyone is genuinely friendly. Laid back environment. Associates genuinely want to help and make sure you’re happy at work. Not too complicated of work. The residents are so kind and adorable and the company truly does care about them no doubt!

Cons

I wish there was a tad bit more organization at the desks and regularly assigned tasks more frequently when no work to do. More training and a standard training schedule set up. Breaks away from front desk would help with moral. The base pay being the same for all positions mostly throws me off since more areas require more work and experience. The food could be better for residents..

Pros

The teams work well together to achieve what is not only best for a positive work environmentbut what is truely best for the residents.

Cons

one challenge would be getting the best care for the residents with the time allowed. This can be challeging but there is always an employee willing to help achive that.
