Pros

- talented engineering team - flexible working hours - central downtown location - nice office space

Cons

- very high turnover, just ask management why so many people have left in the last year - lots of talking to address problems but no action results - old technology stack - no ability to hire top talent either because the salary is low or the word is out that the company is sinking - not a product company, essentially custom development based on sales requirements - every project is rushed and as a result is poor quality

Thanks for the compliments on our office, we think it’s great too. We’re looking forward to expanding our office in the next couple of weeks. We’ll share pictures once the construction and design are complete. We understand that the recent employee turnover might seem surprising to some employees––or worse yet, might seem like a symptom of a greater problem--but rest assured, our management team was not surprised by any of these departures. It’s not uncommon for employees to leave during times of transition, or for employees to simply outgrow a company of our size. We have regular updates with our direct reports and do our best to provide them with opportunities for career growth. That being said, we could improve in some areas. We know we need to do better at providing learning and development opportunities, offering more feedback and recognition, and encouraging the team to be more innovative. We’ve launched initiatives to improve these areas with projects like 360 Reviews, Engagement Surveys, reintroducing Hackathons, and more. In the last 6 months, we’ve hired key senior technology and product leaders whose role it is to develop and empower our growing team. We take our time with recruitment to ensure that we hire the right people. We do prioritize our recruitment for senior technical roles, however, the market for experienced tech talent is tough at the moment. Couple that with needing talent that fits our culture and values, and it makes the search more challenging. It may seem like non-technical roles are prioritized because their time to fill is quicker, but it doesn’t mean we’re not working hard to find new Sensibillians. Growing a scale-up is not always smooth sailing. To thrive at Sensibill, you have to be motivated by our challenges (which will change over time), and have the desire and resilience to work collaboratively to overcome them. That motivation may exist for you in the beginning and dissipate over time as we grow. We’ll work with you to rediscover that motivation, but we also recognize that we may not be successful; and that’s okay too.

Pros

I heard about some negative reviews of Sensibill here on GD... Well what can I say? I think some of the grumpy people aren't factoring in everything about this company. Sensibill offers just about all you could ask for, seriously! Great work culture, amazing benefits, strong leadership. Yes, they are a start-up, and you have to understand there will be growing pains. That's not for you? No problem, please do move on. As for me, I'm quite happy to be working very hard, and I know that my work directly impacts the company - unlike some other places I've worked where one can be made to feel like a neglected, unappreciated drone. Honestly, I look forward to arriving at work every day. It's great!

Cons

No company is perfect. There is a communication gap, which management is addressing. But, heck, today we were told: you didn't know Sensibill will spend $1500 per year on your individual training? Hmm, after 5 more mins of thinking about the cons at Sensibill I can't come up with anything more significant than the state of the office coffee... Gee, and they've scheduled a new vendor for a demo tomorrow!

We're glad you agree that we have one of the best employee value propositions in the industry. You're right about our failure to communicate effectively- we know we have gaps we need to fill, and we're working to improve. Thanks to the feedback from employees, we were quick to identify this and collaboratively implement changes to do better. Happy we have you along for the adventure as we strive to be the best.

Company is falling apart

Pros

Good location in downtown core

Cons

1. Healthy startups have a lot of turnover, this is true - but the management at Sensibill is using that as blinders and aren't able to see that the reason it's happening here isn't because of the stage the company is in, it's because there are some very serious underlying issues that they either refuse or don't have the foresight to see. 2. There is no place for petty politics and bureaucratic nonsense at a startup in this stage - most certainly not in engineering 3. The product (engineering-side) is hacked together with tools unbefitting of any company in 2012+ (unless it has too much legacy code to port over to modern tools/services) 4. Relationship between management/HR and engineering feels more adversarial than it does cooperative 5. Talking does nothing. Management keeps repeating the mantra that we should be open and say when we think things are being done wrong, but from experience, doing this achieves nothing so you may as well not even bother 6. It used to be that Sensibill had no name recognition in tech circles in Toronto, now it has bad name recognition in tech circles; which is significantly worse 7. Nothing that you could potentially learn here is transferrable. This extends past tech skills, even 'leadership' skills. The people you're learning from are not the best examples of folks you should be learning from
