Pros

I know the atmosphere tends to vary from store to store, but the community at my store among other advisors was very welcoming and lovely. It is the only thing I will miss.

Cons

Sephora's values are inconsistent and constantly changing, making it harder for employees to keep up. Working flex in particular below part-time means that your hours aren't guaranteed, making scheduling plans outside of work rather difficult. Part-time/full-time employees must give full availability, including on weekends, so again, this makes plans rather impossible. Sephora also preaches "work and life balance" without giving the necessary tools for their employees to do so, considering that they need full availability from them. Being a flex beauty advisor means that the only benefit you have working there is your 30% discount, which you might not even get to use if you're only scheduled 2 or 3 days a week. If you have bills to pay, I would not recommend the flex position to anybody. The company has seemingly gotten cheaper, despite its evergrowing success, and all of the changes that have occurred throughout my tenure there have changed the sense of appreciation and morale among part-time and flex workers in particular.

Pros

-creative talent is best-in-class, with access to top notch in-house photographers, production resources, and imaginative art directors -incredible, regular brand visits to HQ with generous freebies for beauty lovers -solid benefits -hybrid and remote work options, dependent on role

Cons

-VP's are out of touch, implementing sweeping changes without consulting those that do the relevant work, resulting on complicating processes instead of improving them. -the social marketing approach is all over the place, has no cohesive vision, weak leadership, and retaliatory practices against employees who speak up to advocate for change -they hire outside consultants to make recommendations- these companies lack any understanding of the nuances within the company, create obstacles instead of remove them, and introduce unnecessary complexities into simple processes. It's nonsensical and expensive.

Pros

Competitive starting wages. Employee discount. Occasional training products. Learning opportunities. Comfortable uniform. Access to new/trending products.

Cons

Availability requirements for a part time postion are unreasonable: In order to be part time, you are required to have 3-4 week days & 1 weekend day that are 100% open during hours of operation. Being FULLY available for 4-5 days is essentially a full time job with part time hours/pay. As a job that is heavily geared towards college students, this feels like a weird move. You can be dropped to Flex position at any time: if you are not consistently working 20+ hours a week. Even if it’s because they aren’t scheduling you enough hours. No monthly training product as a flex employee: If you can’t devote 4-5 full days of your week to Sephora, you will not receive monthly training product. This means that they expect you to gain all of your product knowledge from samples/word of mouth, or pay out of pocket with less than 19 hours/week. Hopefully you don’t have bills! (You do occasionally receive in store training products from brand reps, but this is rare.) Oncall: Hours can be hard to come by, especially when you’re flex. Typically you will have to rely on them keeping your extra on-call hours to make ends meet. This means that you never know if you’re getting off at 6 or 9. Rate of pay: the starting pay increases at Sephora SO OFTEN, but they have a hard time keeping up with raising wages for older employees to balance this out. I had been working at my location for 3 years, and made 1 dollar more than the starting wage.
