Great work, Deplorable Management

Pros

First and foremost, you get into this field because you love the mission, not the pay. The satisfaction and sense of reward from working with the clients is fantastic. You have a lot of options when it comes to type of environment you want to work in. Perfect for true entry-level job seekers.

Cons

Pay is pathetic if you do have experience. The degree differential is almost negligible. Advancement, leadership and, training is completely dependent on you Program director/manager - many not well trained, experienced, motivated or competent. There is a VERY CLEAR "us verses them" environment between program/staff and senior management. It is sadly obvious that the head office is solely concerned about the bottom dollar, and not in a "best serve the clients" way. For a non-profit it feels more like you're working for a predatory lender. Benefits are not what they are cracked up to be.

Pros

Great experience with supervision, co-workers, and clients. Good training opportunities and room for bringing in new ideas.

Cons

A lot of paperwork, as is pretty typical. Hard at times to balance paperwork/administrative duties with direct client work.

A great entry level opportunity

Pros

This job has some of the best benefits of any job you can get at an entry level position. Excellent vacation time, affordable health and dental benefits, and they even pay you to get your trainings done. If you are starting out in the mental health or disability field, it is a great place to get started working directly with clients. I have found the program directors and upper management to be very accessible and supportive. And the residential environment can be very comfortable to work in. I can honestly say the company really does care about the individuals they serve. They seem to do their best to support them as much as possible.

Cons

It seems not all the staff hired have experience with how to effectively deal with the population they work with. Probably because the company will hire without experience. This can be tough when you are a worker in a program and the people hired to work side by side with you are not useful to helping the clients. I don't feel there is not a ton of room for growth within the company. As a residential counselor, really the only place to go without further education is to become a program director.

Pros

Understanding, accommodating staff/teams; great work/life balance; decent training opportunities for managers

Cons

Horribly disorganized, inefficient senior management: leadership (rightfully) prioritizes client treatment but loses sight of management and organizational priorities, resulting in suboptimal services, working conditions, and client outcomes. Business acumen is lacking; "efficiency" is a dirty word. Attempts to be "understanding" prevents tough decisions from being made, leaving in place under performing staff, teams, and organizational structures. Hiring process is disorganized, initial training lacking. Overly decentralized but HQ bureaucracy prevents much implementation of "bottom-up" solutions.

Outpatient

Pros

This clinic is one of the most supportive and well organized outpatient clinics I've worked at so far. The staff are highly trained, knowledgeable, and supportive. The pay isn't great but that is how outpatient clinics fair these days. To compensate for low pay, Servicenet provides great training opportunities and incentives for working late hours/weekends. It feels good working at a well managed and competent organization. I love my job and the people I work with at the clinic. Great DBT teams and groups.

Cons

The rates are low but this is more of an insurance reimbursement problem. Hopefully this will improve.
