It's like working for the federal government. (I know because I worked for that, too.) A ton of bureaucracy. Although the company preaches innovation, it isn't really that innovative, at least with the tools that the employees use. Employees are stuck in the "that's the way we've always done it" mindset. If it were up to most of them, the company would still be using typewriters and rotary phones.
This is ironic because the company propaganda always pushes the opposite. We'd go to a lecture telling us not to accept the status quo as an excuse to continue doing something that can be done better, and then you would have that same upper-level manager who gave the lecture not approve a new technology tool because we've always done it the current way. I wish that I was joking, but I'm not. It's like a Monty Python skit.
Part of the reason for this is that many of the employees have been with the company so long, with this being the only job that some of them have had since high school or college, that they don't know anything different. They just bounce around the different departments, sometimes doing a couple of separate tours of the same department. Because of this, they become desensitized with how things are done and will continue doing the same routine no matter how inefficient and head-scratching it is.
