Pros

This place is incredible! Lots of opportunities for innovation and growth. Everyone is hardworking and dedicated and for a smaller company it's amazing how much is still being accomplished. Management is super supportive and accessible as well as friendly, driven by results not ego which is refreshing. Coworkers are also hardworking and friendly, I feel like I'm on a team with a mission.

Cons

If you're uncomfortable with taking initiative this might not be the best fit; this is a place to bring your A-game and innovate.

Pros

-Friendly work environment. -Flexible training schedule.

Cons

-Unstructured training schedule. We were literally given PowerPoint presentations twice a week (for approximately 1 hour each session) and then asked to do our own research to complete our assignments/projects. We were randomly called in for training throughout the week (no course agenda or schedule). -Dishonestly from recruiters. I was promised accommodations from my recruiter that the Smoothstack management had no recollection of until the last week of training. -They are not upfront about the company's "business model". They did not mention in the beginning that you would still need to interview with their so-called "established pipeline of clients". I interviewed with a variety of clients that had no recollection of Smoothstack. -It took almost a year to get placed with a client after the training was over. That meant getting paid minimum wage for an entire year as I waited for opportunities to interview. I’d like to also clarify that every interview went well. The feedback was always good. The hiring manager would notify us, stating that we got accepted for a position, and then “something” would always happen a week later. It was always the same excuse; either the contract was not ready or funding for our position wasn’t available yet.

Smoothstack is a Registered Apprenticeship Program with the Department of Labor. It is a full-time job paired with paid training, mentorship and professional development opportunities. The Apprenticeship pathway creates opportunity for entry-mid level tech jobs that may not otherwise be open without years more experience. Smoothstack's training is not classroom style. We expect our employees-in-training to be self starters. The job is not for everyone. We only select those with the highest aptitude. In order to be successful our apprentices must be ambitious to learn and able to be successful in unchartered environments. We wish you the best of luck in your new adventure. If you would like to talk to someone in HR about your experience pease reach out anytime. Thank you for the review.

Pros

For me the opportunity to get my foot in the door at a well known company is priceless. I came to smoothstack with a foundation of coding learned online and determination to make it. previously i worked in plumbing sales but needed to make a change in carreer. I'm not going to say it was easy or even moderately difficult because that would be an understatement. the teachers are going to challenge you and force you to think and learn for yourself because that is what is required in the industry. but more than that they will teach you to market yourself. smoothstack will get you interviews with their clients but its up to you and you alone to take interviews with the clients so you need to be able to showcase yourself. thankfully that process is handled excellently by smoothstack staff, so if you do have trouble talking about yourself like i do, staff will be extremely helpful on that front. for me this was the best decision ive made in my entire career. currently in my first contract year with the client.

Cons

the recruitment process is pretty arduous, but i understand its a necessary evil.

Pros

Working in the apprenticeship program at Smoothstack has been an enjoyable challenge. The challenge has been enjoyable because there are some great people at Smoothstack. My fellow apprentices in the cohort have been super helpful and encouraging. The HR team is willing to listen to struggles I've had on-boarding and provided opportunities to help work on those processes for later cohorts. The instructors have been very helpful in working through understanding how the Salesforce code works and implementing it in different use cases. Truly grateful to be working here and looking forward to finishing the apprenticeship program!

Cons

Communications can be a bit difficult. The instructors in the program seemed to not know the program's schedule. We also rushed through a lot of content that hopefully won't be regrettable later.

Pros

- Got paid to get trained in-demand DevOps skills like AWS, K8s, and Terraform - Opportunities to work with several AWS services on the company's dime. - Group projects were fun, great to add to a GitHub/resume, and really helped our cohort bond. - 6 month intensive training - If you live in a state with a higher minimum wage, it's livable.

Cons

- No Client opportunities. Our entire 25-person cohort got laid off after successfully completing the training due to a lack of client demand. - Poor communication regarding the above. Management told us all that interviews with that SPECIFIC client were no more than 1-2 weeks out and this repeated for several months, until finally we all got let go same day without any warning (Even our instructor didn't know it was happening until it did)

Pros

Hands-On Training: Smoothstack provides immersive, in-depth training that really prepares you for real-world projects. Supportive Environment: The team fosters collaboration and mentorship, making it easier to learn and grow. Career Growth Opportunities: After the initial training phase, the company helps place you on engaging projects, giving you a chance to rapidly build your portfolio. Strong Community: There is a sense of camaraderie and teamwork that helps keep you motivated and eager to learn.

Cons

Fast-Paced Learning Curve: The training can be intense, so it might feel overwhelming at first if you’re not used to a rigorous schedule. Location Flexibility: Depending on client locations, you may need to be open to relocating or traveling. This can be a challenge for those seeking more predictable schedules.

Pros

- Great opportunity grow really fast in the tech industry. - Cover cost for certifications (AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform) - Mentors are very knowledgeable. So if you have questions you can definitely refer to them. - Great community, people from around the world and they try to have fun every Friday. Smoothstack is a company that trains employee to meet industry standard and then deploy them to its partnered companies. Essentially you are working as a contractor for the company. In order to compensate for this exchange you are given a less pay but they cover your learning cost and resource cost. For someone who is trying to get into the industry I see this as a win-win situation.

Cons

- I get paid 55k a year, living in the state of California I'm essentially living paycheck by paycheck. - Locked in contract for 2 years. - PTO are nonexistent this year. However, they are implementing it 2023.
