Pros

SSA is a fantastic place to work. However, you have to be a little lucky because your management staff will make all the difference in your experience. I've been blessed to have two wonderful management teams. It is truly a blessing to go to work each day and help people and get paid nicely. I have a bachelor's degree in sociology and my salary is over $70,000 and growing each year.

Cons

The biggest downside is that some managers love to micro-manage.

Pros

Lots of time off, very clear about your pay. The structure of the organzation is very clear, and you know who you report to and who they report to.

Cons

No bonuses, government structure is tough, your pay grade dictates the amount of respect people give you. It is tough to advance quickly, even under career ladder positions. They pay is $20,000 less, roughly speaking, for the lower level positions, and the gap widens significantly as you move up.

Pros

Good benefits and decent pay - the federal Thrift Savings Plan is comsidered to be among the best 401k- type programs available. Pay is lower than comparable private sector jobs, but job security is better - a lot of people need SSA's services, and there's a lot of demand. Excellent camaraderie between employees - staff works together very well and they work together to provide top-caliber customer service. Good opportunity to advance if you're willing to work at it. Most managers and supervisors know their jobs well and try their best to create a positive work environment. Many employees committed enough to work for the long term, and this has mostly been encouraged.

Cons

Lack of staffing - never enough people available to handle all of the walk-in, call-in, and phone-in customer traffic. Too much emphasis on statistics and short-term numbers at the expense of good customer service. Too dependent on video-based teletraining. Changes in work rules due to legislation is a constant.
