      The end has finally come

      Pros

      It was great while it lasted. But now that the e-commerce website we built has finally come down, we can look back fondly on the things that were great: the teamwork, the talented co-workers, the willingness to try new things.

      Cons

      In retrospect, however, we were only able to be as good as our failing product lines allowed us to. Apple beat Walkman. Samsung beat Bravia. And on and on.

      Tough Culture

      Pros

      1) Some fantastic people who care and want to do a great job. 2) Competitive salaries (more than competitive at the director on up levels), good benefits 3) Most roles have a good work-life balance

      Cons

      1) The culture is not very good. Lots of layoffs, constant fear of losing your job. People protect their jobs, and don't worry about the company or the organization outside of their direct team 2) Things are often dictated at the micro level on high from company HQ 3) Most roles are just about executing plans from above. Innovation is often talked about, but innovative ideas are quickly squashed.

      Unfulfilled Promise - lack of vision

      Pros

      Some great people, with potential for providing strong contribution. History of strong technology; still some important patents. Decent pay and good benefits. Potential for important synergies between Sony pictures, Sony music, Playstation, Consumer electronics and professional electronics -- no competitors have that.

      Cons

      Weak management with frequent turnover. No accountability. Constant re-shuffling of leadership in Japan means nobody has the incentive to take business risks and "own" important new initiatives. US management has been reduced to beancounters and apologists. True product management, strategic planning and R&D have all been decimated.
