Pros

Sothebys is a good place for males and specific women (generally white) to rise in the ranks. The reality is that a lot of people that are more senior at this company are not exceptionally good at what they do but maybe abrasive and or lucky. The role I was hired for was entirely different than what I was expected to do. Okay fine - a pivot can be expected in any work place... but what was troubling was the lack of advice and direction from my manager. No one knows how or why anything works and or why it breaks. It’s a mess. Women are expected to look put together at all times while men are not and explain that it’s okay because ??? - Anyway I hope this organization can thrive and continue to provide overpriced art for the .0001% - it’s an interesting work environment catering to people while knowing you likely are making 1/1000th of what your clients and the senior male white execs are. The pros of this company are you can tell your friends and family funny stories of pretentious people (clients and colleagues) - also the cafe gives you 10% off so on that 30k salary you can treat yourself to a latte if you properly budget for it!

Cons

Women are underpaid, no clear direction, broken systems, rude people.

Pros

There are a select few gems of managers and some turned into very good in real life friends. Good life/work balance.

Cons

I've never developed such deep disappointment and mental stress. Lack of strong diverse leadership from department heads, no support from direct managers, extremely overworked. Overwhelming amount of problems to solve and loads of meetings, good luck doing your job. Terrible onboarding process for new and excited team members, I.T. department has no true understanding of how departments and teams function or what programs are needed, sometimes up to 2 weeks to be able to work. If you're looking for growth, you'll get it here not because you deserve or earned it, but because everyone is understaffed and they praise anyone who is willing to overwork themselves by simply taking on more work. Just make sure not to express how overworked you are, you might be blamed and gaslit for taking on too much extra.

Pros

Name value at best. Nothing more

Cons

The elitist nature was a major factor for me to look for new jobs. Sotheby's caters to the rich, and after working awhile, I felt that the company focused more on money than art. It is a saddening reality for sure. POC employees especially have less of a chance to be promoted or even be recognized. The people that tend to be promoted are the slick talkers and lazy employees, which is absolutely mind boggling. I have to also say, Sotheby's did a horrendous job in accessing the situation of COVID. They did not create a safe working environment and pushed for MORE AND MORE sales with 0 operational capacity. Leadership and accountability are also non-existent, and people resort to finger pointing and blaming. I seriously think I had nervous breakdowns due to the extremely toxic/ rude client and internal employee emails I faced everyday. No one is on your side here; you're by yourself. And to explain further, I was always scared of making mistakes, and worked till 9pm daily to triple check my work. I knew if I didn't do my 200%, people will be sure to professionally humiliate me. If you can make a decision, don't apply to Sotheby's.
