Great, Unless You're a Woman

Pros

Most people working here are great mentors and Southland really tries to build relationships among employees with events outside of work.

Cons

The culture in the MD office is highly unwelcoming to women. Experienced several uncomfortable and inappropriate looks, and was aware of certain people making sexual and disgustingly inappropriate comments about women in the office, which are far too vile to repeat. Southland needs to address this issue of sexual harassment and educate male employees on how to respect their female counterparts. While this doesn't apply to a majority of men working in that office, there are several of them who are absolute pigs.

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience at Southland. We agree at Southland we focus on building great relationships with our employees. As you noted, we strive to provide many avenues for impactful mentorships and building community to thrive during and outside of work. We are however, deeply concerned with your latter comments about the treatment of women in our MD office. At Southland we are committed to a harassment free workplace. We have a strict Anti-Harassment Policy that all employees are required to follow. We require mandatory Anti-Harassment training for all managers. Which trains on the policy and how to recognize/prevent harassment and properly handle reports. All our leaders, managers, and human resources representatives are committed to providing a safe environment to receive any reports of harassment. We are equally committed to thoroughly investigating all reports of harassment. These commitments are backed by our core values of People, Safety, Integrity, and Accountability. We remain committed to listening to any issues you may have experienced during your employment and encourage you to connect with one of our human resources representatives or myself regardless if you are a current or former employee, so we can properly respond to you. Pros

-12-15 years ago they were a good company to work for, but a lot has changed since the division manager changed hands -Flexibility

Cons

-upper management are some of the greediest people you will ever meet -upper management will never admit "they" are wrong, they will find someone to blame and force them out -they pay you just enough to keep you from looking for a new job -if you're not in the "club" they will eventually make you the scapegoat

Thank you for your review. As a former Southland employee, you are aware that people and accountability are two of our core values and providing personal and professional growth for our employees is a measurement of our success. As we continue to grow and create new opportunities for our employees, we view this as a positive attribute of Southland that historically has been a major source of excitement for our current and perspective employees. We also recognize that when growth occurs and employees are promoted, new leadership styles come into play which may differ from previous leadership. While some employees may not find this comfortable for them personally, we encourage our employees to discuss these concerns when they arise. We also recognize that if an employee is unable to adjust to the constant growth that Southland is currently experiencing, change may be necessary at some point. Regarding the comments on greed, blame and special employee treatment, I would have to say that your observations are not the norm. While it’s true that Southland firmly believes in the concept of accountability, we do not place blame on anyone who could not have risen above their circumstances and taken ownership to achieve a desired outcome either internally or externally. Furthermore, there is no level within the organization that is exempt from that statement. Historically we’ve made some tough decisions to support this commitment to accountability by placing the right people in the right seats for the benefit of the organization, as opposed to benefiting any one person individually. Beware: A Hot Mess of Multi-Million Dollar Losses and Layoffs

Pros

The 401k match is generous. There are a lot of good Vietnamese restaurants in the area.

Cons

• If you like your senior management to have a “you’re CRUSHING IT dude”, bro type mindset that places priority on playing golf and drinking with clients and generally acting in an immature and irresponsible manner, Southland is the place for you! Senior leaders don't know much about mechanical construction coming from the temperature controls world. Executive management back east finally realized the huge disconnect and installed some people from the Northern California office to run the Garden Grove office effectively making Southern California leadership into puppets. • In a recent all-hands staff meeting, we had to listen to senior leaders explain and complain how stressed out they've become, keeping them awake at night biting fingernails. I guess we are supposed to feel sorry for them while we watch our friends and colleagues get laid off. A narcissistic bunch! • In today’s robust construction market, you’ve got to wonder about a company that manages to rack up multi-million-dollar losses for consecutive years with more losses projected for 2019. They have been laying off many of the smartest and most talented people in the industry – those same people who received many high fives and “you’re crushing it” kudos. Many of those talented people who were not laid off are leaving voluntarily for greener pastures (who wants to work at an outfit in the red for years with no end in sight). Considering that growth and profitability of a company are the two tests of management decision making, you can see that something is very wrong here. • The human resources personnel are two-faced. • If you are considering Southland in Garden Grove as a possible employment destination, I would be very very careful and do your homework about the company, their financial performance, layoffs, and employee turnover.

Thank you for your feedback. It is unfortunate your personal view is one of disappointment. We are shifting the organization from an inwardly focused group to one that is customer centric that strives to win as a team. We have made difficult decisions on personnel because our results have not met expectations. When making these decisions, talent is just one piece of the puzzle. Attitude is key to success and it takes employees all buying into the vision, working together as a team to achieve it, and being accountable for the results. So, if you want to work in a place that is challenging old thinking and the status quo, looking for leaders, is establishing a positive, supportive, fun environment, then this is the place for you. We appreciate that change can be difficult, but it also can create rewarding opportunities. I am confident the actions we have taken will favorably position the company and our employees for the future in this market. As proof points we are heading in the right direction, we have had a number of recent major project wins that shows that we are on the right track. If you are a current employee, I encourage you to reach out to anyone in senior management to further discuss the areas covered in your post, perhaps over a bowl of Pho at one of the great Vietnamese restaurants you mentioned in the area. We have an open door and encourage feedback and collaboration, so that we all may gain something from this opportunity. I appreciate you providing your thoughts. -Payman Farrokhyar
